UK's Times to target U.S., world

Posted by Maddie Hanna on May 30, 2006 at 2:05 PM
While most paid newspapers are trying to cope with staggering circulation drops, last week, the Rupert Murdoch-owned, London-based Times announced plans to start publishing in the U.S. Now it’s talking about potential partnerships around the world.

Plans are already underway for the Times to provide news to the world’s biggest paper, Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun, Times editor Robert Thomson told Reuters.

With the US edition, Thomson hopes to win 10,000 new readers, likely international business readers.

“Many of the great papers in the U.S. that had networks of correspondents have trimmed them at a time when U.S. interest in the outside world is increasing,” he said.

The US edition, to be published this Friday, will be in a tabloid format. For cost efficiency, fellow News Corp paper the New York Post’s distribution and printing facilities will be used.
