Search engine giant Google reports that it is launching technology that will let users search for news content on blog posts. The optimized Google Blog Search will find and arrange the 900,000 blog entries that are added each day. Previously the service only let users to type keywords into the search engine.

Mobile technology seems to be gaining popularity in Flanders after the launch of the iPhone as some newspapers began to offer mobile services, reported Dorien Aerts from the Online Journalism Blog.

De Standaard's mobile site, which was launched on June 16, has news, weather forecast and updated traffic information. The paper was also the first to introduce blogging to its site.

De Tijd is finance-oriented, providing mobile users with daily news, currency information and the users own "investment wallet".     

Local papers Het Belang van Limburg and Gazet van Antwerpen have mobile sites offering both national, international, sports, cultural and society news.

Aerts pointed out that Flemish papers like Het Laatste Niews, De Morgen and Het Nieuwsblad have not yet launched mobile sites. He also mentioned that so far no Flemish papers have used mobile widgets or localization and personalization functions.

The Web has entirely changed the journalist-reader relationship. Two-way reader interaction is gaining ground through email, comments, SMS, online chats and blog posts, 24/7. This would imply that news outlets increasingly need ombudsmen. Yet there are reportedly fewer than 40 ombudsmen in the US, and few papers are willing to hire one, at a time of general cost-cutting. Maybe they should think about the potential costs of not having an ombudsman, and figure that the readers’ editor is not (only) a guardrail against angry readers. He or she is a bridge into Web 2.0 journalism.

For many major dailies, the current trend of newsroom integration seems like a natural evolution nowadays. The Editors Weblog has regularly showcased best examples of newsroom integration and has advocated that papers follow the trend. Yet many, if not most, newspapers continue to function well while keeping a non-integrated organization. So the question is: do papers have to integrate? In this first piece of a three part-series investigating non-integrated newsrooms, the Figaro.fr managers explain to the Weblog how online fits in the group’s strategy.

 
Thanks to the Internet, anyone with a computer can put his or her ideas on a world platform.  This has created new citizen power never felt by individuals nor the communities in which they live.  For the first time, writers are truly paying attention to what citizens want to read, rejuvenating news in local communities who feel a lack of local coverage from traditional sources. Debbie Galant, a Montclair, New Jersey Local, saw a desire for news in her community that made her decide to try her hand at online reporting. Hoping to fill the local news void in their community Galant and co-founder Liz George started a local news site, Baristanet.com.

Copyright suits against Google roll on in some nations while in others newspapers are striking content sharing deals with search engine companies. The divide between these two approaches is echoed by a divide in opinion in how newspapers should adapt to the Internet. CityTools founder Robert Cauthorn believes instead of resisting changing business practices newspapers need to jump on the bandwagon and learn how to make the Internet work for them.

In the age of integrated newsrooms and convergence, the idea that a paper can scoop itself by posting a breaking story on the Internet is becoming outdated.  Donna Shaw of the American Journalism Review wonders if there are any exceptions.

Bloggers are often portrayed as having a tense relationship with mainstream media, defying traditional reporting practices while seeking recognition and credit for their work. But several recent announcements imply a dawning awareness that serious bloggers produce legitimate work.

Taking it's cue from the US based "collective intelligence" online encyclopedia Wikipedia, Baidu, China's most popular search engine, has started a user-generated encyclopedia of its own called Baidupedia. The site seems to be gaining popularity, made easier by the fact that Wikipedia is banned by the Communist Party. Yet the Financial Times is skeptical about the long-term success of Baidupedia because it is highly censored which is against the basic principles of Wikis.

YourHub.com, a grassroots journalism site that allows its users to connect with people in their neighborhood, has produced a print companion that many newspapers are including in their regular editions.

Last week, Assistant Managing Editor for Continuous News at the Washington Post, Rajiv Chandrasekaran, spoke with readers about the concept of the Continuous News desk in as online chat. Below are some highlights and commentary:

About three weeks ago a new site on Indian journalism launched: Newswatch India. It's aim is to become the preferred online destination for Indian journalists looking for information pertinent to their profession. The site is well designed and covers media-related topics reaching from ethics and freedom to advertising and PR. It deals with similar issues as the Editors Weblog but with a focus on India.

Asked about the team behind Newswatch India, Subir Ghosh, editor-in-chief, wrote to us: "The team comprises myself (with a background in wire, print, and online journalism) and an intern, Priyanka Chhabra. The site has been developed-designed by myself using an opensource blogging script (Nucleus CMS). Right now original content is a tenth; I hope to invert the proportion as the site keeps gaining credibility."
