A Tennessee newspaper has redesigned its Monday edition, consolidating sections to cut costs, according to Editor and Publisher.

The Knoxville News Sentinel still ran 30 pages, merging its local news, national news, sports and features sections on Monday.  The paper will still have four sections for its Tuesday through Saturday editions.  

The paper is set to change other features, such as releasing most stock tables online only.
Jack McElroy, editor, said that the changes are "intended to reduce costs," but should make the paper "more engaging."

E.W. Scripps, the paper's parent company, recently cut back 400 employees, 50 of which were employed by the Knoxville News Sentinel, which has a circulation of 120,000 daily.

The Globe and Mail is positive on the future of printed newspapers, and it is putting its money where its mouth is.

The newspaper is preparing for another redesign of its print edition to take advantage of new high-speed colour presses after awarding Transcontinental Inc. an 18-year, $1.7bn printing contract.

The transaction with Transcontinental comes as The Globe and a handful of other newspapers in Canada buck the North American trend of declining readership, circulation and ad revenue.

"There is a lot of mileage in high-quality newspapers," Globe publisher Phillip Crawley said in an interview yesterday after the announcement of the deal.

Phillip Crawley said that the deal is "a sign of our continued confidence in the future of the newspaper business."

Crawley said the redesign is planned for late 2010 or early 2011 and will include a reduction in the size of the paper by 13⁄4 inches to a height of 21 inches (53 centimetres).

The new printing press will allow for the newspaper to print in full colour on all pages and offer advertisers glossy newsprint stock.

"Colour on every page opens up design opportunities that previously didn't exist."

The last big redesign of The Globe - a division of CTVglobemedia Inc. - was launched in April, 2007.

The Times of London has digitized an extensive portion of its archives, offering over 20 million articles dating from 1785 to 1985. The articles - viewable for free on the Times Online - include the paper's coverage of famous historical events, such as the Battle of Waterloo, the 1929 stock market crash, and Amelia Earheart's solo Atlantic flight.

The archives will offer several special features, including an interactive timeline, a comprehensive search tool, and over 150 topic pages. According to Anne Spackman, editor-in-chief of the Times Online, the Times wants its online archive to enhance its reputation as "arguably the most famous newspaper in the world."

"There are cheaper ways, but the company really backed it and wanted it to be very good," Spackman said. "We are a paper with a real history, and that is very important to us. We wanted that whole history to be in there."

But here are a few more results that may have gone under the radar.

If provided resources to invest in editorial quality, what would you do first within the newsroom?

Across all categories, the responses illustrated two clear concerns for editors, which superceded all others: their staff needs to be attuned to new media (36% of the respondents would first train their staff in new media), and they need more journalists to produce quality coverage (30%, up from 22% last year). As more newsrooms face layoffs and tight budgets, editors are increasingly seeking to safeguard one of the main conditions to quality journalism: a team of qualified journalists.

For editors from newspapers whose number of journalists had decreased, their main priority was to recruit more journalists, at 50%, while also recognizing the necessity of new media training, at 31%. Even among newspapers whose staff had increased, 26% of editors wished to recruit more journalists (36% new media training).

This clearly shows that, in the view of editors, cutting staff and journalistic resources is not a solution - to the contrary - to resolve financial concerns a newspaper may have.

Overall, what do you view as the two greatest threats to the future of your newspaper?

57% of respondents saw the biggest threat to the future of newspapers coming from declining readership among young people. One of the greatest challenges faced by newspapers today is structural, linked to a change in habits among readers, as they become consumers of alternative forms of media.
Tied to this, a good share of respondents (37%) saw the Internet and digital media as a threat. This was closely followed by lack of editorial innovation (36%) and lack of investment (29%), which are also inter-related.

The results showed a split between perception of threats as being external, due to contextual evolutions of the market (young readership decline, digital media) and internal, due to lack of newspaper innovation - or the financial means to innovate.

Now looking specifically to your newspaper's editorial independence in the future, what do you view as the principal threat?

Perceived threats to editorial independence ranged relatively closely from 13% who listed 'other' concerns, to 23% who thought the biggest pressure would come from advertisers, through 19% who listed political pressure and 20% shareholder pressure (20%). Still, a combined 42% perceived the main threat as being related to newspapers' financial dependence, whether on shareholders and advertisers.

Where newspapers were heavily capitalized in the stock market, such as in Western Europe and North America, shareholder pressure was strong, 35% and 23% respectively, but political pressure didn't pose any threat - 3% for both.

Inversely, in many other regions, financial pressures were less important, but lack of press freedom led many editors to fear political pressure.

Do you think that in the future opinion and analysis pages will:

The results were stable compared to 2006. Two thirds (67%) of the respondents believed opinion and analysis pages would increase: many foresaw the upcoming evolution of newspaper content, which will be less about factual news and more about analysis and commentary.

An astonishingly small number of respondents from North America (50%) believed analysis and opinion would increase, compared to 76% for Western Europe (and 78% Eastern). This large difference underlines a divergence in editors' perception of the function their newspapers will have in the future, whether these increasingly focus on constant breaking news or instead turn to more analytical, magazine-type content. These results also reflect worries by American editors about having the proper resources to increase their opinion and analytical content.

Welcome to the 2008 edition of the Newsroom Barometer, an annual survey of editors around the world conducted by Zogby International and commissioned by the World Editors Forum and Reuters.

The global survey gathered the answers of more than 700 editors and senior news executives from 120 countries, and was conducted online in March 2008.

In last year's Newsroom Barometer, newspaper editors had revealed their overwhelming optimism about the future of their newspapers - an optimism that is still widespread today. In this edition, editors worldwide see neither their newsroom nor their journalists as being "print-only," having clearly accepted the multimedia revolution.

Do you agree or disagree that the "integrated newsroom" or "multimedia newsroom" will be the norm for newspapers in your country in 5 years?



Among the main results this year:
 
-  86% believe integrated print and online newsrooms will become the norm, and 83% believe journalists will be expected to be able to produce content for all media within five years.
  
- Two-thirds believe some editorial functions will be outsourced, despite frequent newsroom opposition to the practice.

- A plurality - 44% - believe on-line will be the most common platform for reading news in the future, compared with 41% last year. Thirty-one cited print (down from 35% last year), 12% mobile and 7% e-paper. The rest were unsure.
 
- 35% said training journalists in new media was the number one priority for investing in editorial quality. Recruiting more journalists was cited by 31%, up from 22% last year.
 
- A majority of editors - 56%- believe news in the future will be free, up from 48% from last year's survey. Only one-third believe the news will remain paid for, while 11% were unsure.
 
- Two-thirds of respondents believe the importance of opinion and analysis pages will increase.
 
- A majority - 58% - think the decline in young readership is the biggest threat for the future of newspapers.
 
"The survey shows that editors-in-chief are already multi-media minded and that they have the capacity to carry out the transition from print-only to print and online," said Bertrand Pecquerie, Director of the World Editors Forum.

The 2008 Newsroom Barometer also brought good news concerning editors' morale. Despite some (see Part 4) growing concerns as to the improvement of the quality of journalism in the future, an overwhelming majority of newspaper editors are still very optimistic about the future of their newspaper:

Since the Financial Times integrated its newsroom in 2006 and moved into a new one in 2007, it has been among the few British newspapers to increase its circulation, ad revenue and profits. Changes in the editorial process resulting from integration included “storybuilding,” new work shifts and lunch-hour training sessions.

The New York Times announced the shuttering of its online subscription service, TimesSelect. The obvious question: is this the end of the paid-for online model altogether? How will the Wall Street Journal’s (WSJ) website, the Web’s largest paid-for subscription website, react? The Editors Weblog collected the insight of media analyst Philip Stone, Ali Rahnema, Corporate Development Director at the Irish Times, and Daniel Bernard, General Manager of WSJ Online.

The Arab Press Network presents an interview with Ehab Zelaky, editor of the daily Al-Dustur, which was launched by its eponymous, weekly, sister paper at the end of March. Zelaky describes how the staff was able to combine the production of a daily and weekly newspaper.

In this section, John Zogby, CEO of Zogby International, and Jeff Jarvis, new media proponent and founder of Buzzmachine, comment on the results of the Newsroom Barometer. Both found that editors’ optimism and open-mindedness to new media was a clear indication that newspapers were embracing the digital revolution, yet Jarvis fears that may not be enough…

Mike Curtin, associate publisher of The Columbus Dispatch, predicted that metropolitan dailies, including his, will turn towards more local content, and less general news, which will be available online for free. He also foresaw regional newspapers agreeing to share content.

Public relations firms have discovered the joys of blogging, and could soon stop feeding their message to newspaper reporters, staples of PR distribution. Not only has it been reveled that WalMart is straying from newspapers and employing bloggers to spread the good corporate word, but the buzz at America's PR Week's annual awards just held in New York was all about blogging.

Cutting the number of pages dedicated to stock pages is officially becoming a trend. Los Angeles Times has announced that it will cut its stock listings down to one page. But unlike other papers that have done so, LAT reports that it will expand it's business coverage.

The Washington Post has picked up the story of Denver's Rocky Mountain News cutting its stock pages, which used to total 7.5, down to 1. Although some readers complained, the decision is saving the paper a substantial amount in printing costs, it has had "almost no measurable impact on circulation" and the paper's editor, John Temple attests that it's the direction that the newspaper industry is taking with stocks and all news being constantly updated online.  

As paper and print costs rise and the Internet posts up to the minute data, many newspapers have been scaling back their stock listing pages directing readers to their websites. But not all readers comply. The latest paper to cut financial listings, the Rocky Mountain News, found out the hard way.
