Le Monde to "save" 1,000 pages per year, but since when does killing content sell quality papers?

Yesterday, following a historical newsroom strike at the print paper on April 14 (in the wake of a planned 129 layoffs), Le Monde's board discussed projects to save 1,000 pages of content per year.

According to CBNews, this will be achieved by a better distribution of pages between the mid-week and weekend print editions, as well as the "rebalancing" of supplements.

In reality, Le Monde will simply have less staff to produce content. Of the 129 job cuts, 89 will affect the newsroom, including 45 for staff in charge of producing written content.

Although many papers around the world have been forced to trim down their print editions in an effort to cut costs, the situation in France is critical: every year, quality papers cut back on content, thus giving less incentive for readers to buy them, leading to decreased revenues and further cost and content cuts...

Some of London's freesheets already carry more content than many of France's quality, paid-for dailies.

Le Monde's plan to restructure could also call on the currently non-integrated journalists to work both for the print paper, supplements and the online edition.

Update: Journalists at Le Monde voted in a general staff assembly today, on April 16, to stage their second one-day strike in a week, protesting against the planned layoffs. Le Monde is scheduled not to appear on Thursday, April 17.

France: Strike shuts down publication at Le Monde

Le Monde's presses were cold on April 14, with an employee strike halting publication for only the second time in the 64-year long history of the paper.

Le Monde, which is distributed in the early afternoon, was not available yesterday and this morning on newsstands around France. A new edition will appear today at lunchtime.

The strike, voted by employees on April 8, was in protest of a planned 130 job cuts announced by the paper's management. The cuts represent one in four journalists at Le Monde.

France: Le Monde strike to take place April 14

Employees at Le Monde voted Tuesday, April 8, to go on strike to protest the management's decision to cut 130 positions, in what will be the first strike in the newspaper's history.

At a meeting Tuesday morning, an overwhelming majority of the appoximately 300 members of the editor's society voted to stage a 24-hour strike on Monday, April 14. They also announced the decision not publish the Tuesday edition of the paper.

President of Le Monde Eric Fottorino said that he had planned to address employees next Monday to discuss the staff cuts. He declared himself disappointed that employees chose instead to declare a strike "in an informal manner, tallying votes through raising hands" before he had an opportunity to explain his decision, reports AFP.  

This latest issue represents only the third threat of a strike since Le Monde's founding in 1944. The prior two instances were resolved before employees went on strike.

On Nov. 27th the veil of uncertainty surrounding Libération’s reorganization plan was lifted: in a compromise between the employee representatives and management, 76 of the 276 employees will lose their jobs.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is experiencing some problems settling in under the direction of private owner Brian Tierney. With potential staff reductions up to 30% and dropping newsroom morale from a once Pulitzer Prize winning paper the future of private ownership seems to be in question.

When profit-driven management and content-focused journalists collide, situations like the Berliner Zeitung “catastrophe” — in the words of one of its editors — happen. New owner David Montgomery, much hated by the German daily’s staff, appointed a new, also hated editor: Josef Depenbrock. The staff recently published a protest edition in response, and with the World Cup and subsequent international attention fast approaching, the Independent reports the situation has not improved.

Wales: Trinity Mirror staff vote for strike action

National Union of Journalists (NUJ) members in Cardiff, Wales have voted for strike action in protest at planned job cuts at Trinity Mirror owned newspapers The Western Mail and The South Wales Echo (see previous posting).

NUJ representative Martin Shipton made the following statement: "There are serious concerns about the way in which cuts are being imposed at the Western Mail and Echo by Trinity Mirror centrally."

Two of Scotland's biggest tabloids The Daily Record and The Sunday Mail have eliminated 43 jobs. The job cuts included 16 editorial positions.

France: Planned job cuts cause strike at Libération

The left wing French daily Libération will not be on sale today, nor will its website be updated. The staff at the newspaper announced a twenty four hour renewable strike in protest at a plan to fire 52 employees.

Over the last 12 months the paper has suffered a decrease of 9.8% in circulation and 10% in advertising. Libération is currently operating at a loss of approximately 497 000 euros per month.

Major journalists strike in Norway

According to AP, Norwegian journalists extend strike at major newspapers. Nearly 400 more Norwegian journalists will join a week-long strike that has stemmed the flow of news in the Nordic country, after negotiators said Wednesday that talks had yielded no progress. Nearly 2,900 journalists went on strike May 12 after they failed to settle a new contract, crippling major newspapers and the national news and photo agencies. Another 390 have joined them this week. State-led mediation between the Norwegian Union of Journalists and the Norwegian Media Businesses' Association collapsed in a dispute about pensions, treatment of temporary staff and raises for the lowest-paid journalists.
