Former editor of the Daily Mirror Piers Morgan said that all national newspapers will be free within 10 years, and his paper should be the kick-off to the transition, according to Press Gazette.

Editor Roy Wright says that the Huddersfiled Daily Examiner "will retain a strong network of frontline news gatherers" despite the scaling back of editorial management and production roles, Hold the Front Page is reporting.

In an effort to move to "a streamlined multimedia operation," the Trinity Mirror North West "shake up" of the daily paper will leave 16 van drivers and three transport supervisors unemployed, in addition to the dissolution of four editorial roles.  The paper will now switch to overnight printing.

"The changes are both radical and necessary," Wright said.  "Recent research shows there is strong demand for the Examiner to be available earlier in the day."

The paper seeks to remain "at the forefront of the digital revolution," while maintaining the quality of the paper for readers, Wright said.

Trinity Mirror has announced that the Liverpool Daily Post will undergo a major restructuring.  According to the paper's website they are launching a "revolutionary new editorial operating model by streamlining its production process to create a centralized hub, providing up-to-the-minute online content for its websites and writing and producing all its Merseyside daily and weekly newspaper titles."

The Post will also stop publishing its Saturday edition, making it a Monday to Friday morning paper, although its website will remain a seven-day-a-week operation.

Neil Benson, Editorial Director of Regionals, at Trinity Mirror, and the three Editors of the Birmingham titles that have merged, have completely changed the approach to newsroom management by combining workforces to cut costs.

To follow up on last month's Weblog story on the Trinity Mirror's complete overhaul of its workflow, which anticipated the transition, a series of photos have been published which demonstrate the restructured newsroom, combining "all-in-one" news conferences to share ideas and stories, and to maximize output. 

The Daily Mirror has launched a digital archive of its newspapers from 1903-1980.  The archive will be available to the public through an online subscription-based service.

The archive will house Mirror papers including the Daily Express, Daily Star, Sunday Express and Star on Sunday.  The new site that houses the archives is ukpressonline.

According to journalism.co.uk, "prices for access to the archive range from £5 for a 48-hour pass to £295 for one year."

In an effort to combat an economic crisis, The Daily Mirror has launched "an affiliate marketing scheme" that gives shoppers as much as 10 percent cash back every time they buy through the site.

MirrorCashback.com brings "an innovative form of discount to online retail," managing director of nationals at Trinity Mirror Mark Hollinshead said.  Customers would create an account with the Mirror to receive cash back.

MirrorCashback gives shoppers a choice of 1,400 retailers, including higher-end stores, and is powered by VAC Media, the "biggest operator of consumer loyalty websites in the UK."

Trinity Mirror has launched a website designed for viewing on mobile phones for the Birmingham Post.  The new Post site follows the launch of the Daily Mirror's mobile site last week.

In addition to the launch of the mobile site, the print version of the Post was relaunched this week.  The site offers personalized news and allows users to build their own homepage.

According to the Guardian, ten more of Trinity's regional papers are expected to get their own mobile sites within the next few months.

BBC Trust Chairman Sir Michael Lyons suggested that the UK's local and regional news outlets may not be strong or satisfying enough.  Newspaper groups Trinity Mirror and Johnston Press reacted negatively to the comments. Meanwhile, Northcliffe North East Regional Director John Meehan said that the remarks point to the chairman's "strong bias" against the regional press.

The Daily Mirror has launched a mobile phone service, Mirror Mobile, offering news without having to register or subscribe.  Users can personalize their service, or have it personalized for them based on pages they previously visited.

Trinity Mirror, the papers owner has views the technology as "a fully converged third publishing platform."

Bertrand Pecquerie wrote in an article in Le Monde yesterday that the French newspaper industry is in crisis and, worryingly, turning to the State for help. Newspapers have been subsidized in France for the past ten years and, in those ten years, the situation has not improved, it has actually worsened.

Pecquerie believes that there are four core problems facing the industry and these are not being addressed. The four core issues are method, diagnosis, objective and means.

The Daily Post, a Trinity Mirror newspaper, has launched its first Welsh language news website in North Wales.

The Welsh language site, dailypostcymraeg.co.uk, will sit alongside the English language version - dailypost.co.uk - with both providing regular news updates for the region.

The new site has been developed as an additional service by the publisher to showcase Welsh language content, rather than just duplicating the existing English site.

dailypostcymraeg.co.uk will include videos with Welsh language commentaries and interviews, Welsh language forums, and Welsh comments and blogs.

The latest circulation figures for UK newspapers (June 30 to July 27) indicate that the papers with the largest circulation were the popular national weekly The Sun and Sunday title News of the World. The lowest circulation figures for that time period, meanwhile, were seen at the weekly up-market nationals The Scotsman and the Sunday Herald.

An interesting and growing market has opened up for newspapers with online editions in Africa: the expat reader looking for news about home from a familiar news source. The print version of newspapers remains paramount in Africa in terms of readership and revenue, but newspaper organizations are waking up to this new medium's potential.

When Kenya's Daily Nation launched its website a decade ago, it had a clear vision. The country's leading newspaper recognised that the 1.8 million Kenyans living abroad had little access to news from home, and that an online edition would have mass appeal to the increasing number of ex-pats who hungered for news. This is something that editors and publishers across Africa should bare in mind: the International Labour Organisation estimates there are some 7.1 million Africans living outside their home country. The number is rising rapidly and by 2025 could climb to one in ten, the IOM predicts.

The Editors Weblog spoke with the Daily Nation's managing editor of special projects, Macharia Gaitho, about his newspapers online edition and he said: "We wanted to extend the paper's audience beyond Kenya's geographic borders to deepen the paper's voice and authority, while also offering a service to the growing Kenyan diaspora." The website was launched formally in October 1998 with a dedicated team, following trials the previous year just before the Kenyan general election.

This service goes back to the very foundation of what newspapers are all about, they are not only providing a news service, they are also serving their communities, even the members of it who have moved away.

The fact that the online edition is very reflective of the print edition is a pull to the expat community who will immediately have the emotional response of recognition and thus feel "familiar" with the web version from their first visit, this familiarity will likely encourage return visitors. As one of the most trusted news organization on the African continent, it would already be a first port of call for expats looking for news from home, but with its easily navigable site, clear graphics, photographs, video footage and with a style that echoes the print version, they have cleverly tapped into the expat market.

Gaitho, who describes the Daily Nation website as the "recognized go-to place online for news on Kenya" said it was important that the web edition reflected the "Nation's look and feel."

The Daily Nation site has recently undergone a revamp and the new-look site achieved 50,000 unique visitors daily in its first week after the launch. The previous version averaged 80,000 unique visitors daily. Explaining this disparity in visitors, Gaitho said: "Because of faster download speeds and improved features, we project the new one will surpass 80k".
 
However, some news organisations in Kenya have been slow to see the potential of this new market and only have a web version as a nod to this evolving technology without fully engaging with the medium. Dr George Ogola at the University of Lancashire says that in Kenya, "The element of interactivity, the very essence of 'experiencing' news online remains unexploited." He believes that news organisations need to recognise that with the advent of online news, the relationship between the reader and the newspaper has been altered.

The appeal of ex-pat readers is therefore another attraction for African newspapers to consider when they lead the charge to online editions, not only for editors looking to boost their news organizations readership and to keep their media house relevant, but also to appeal to advertisers such as Western Union who wish to reach the expat audience. It is as a result now mandatory for any newspaper in Africa to have an online edition.

The Editors Weblog spoke to the Directeur de Publications at Le Jour in Cameroon, Haman Mana, about his thoughts on this issue. Recently launched newspaper Le Jour is a particularly interesting case, as they chose to launch the print and online version at the same time on the 17 September 2007. This decision underscores how online media is growing in importance in Africa, even though print still creates more revenue and attracts a larger readership. When I asked Mana about his thinking behind this decision, he said bluntly, "It is inconceivable for any Cameroonian newspaper that wants to be taken seriously not to have an online edition."



Mana agreed with Gaitho on how it is important that the online edition mirror the newspaper, saying, "The design was an important step for us, because we wanted to keep the spirit of the print edition." Mana reports that a significant portion of Le Jour's online readership is also made up of the Cameroon disapora. He also highlighted how having an online edition is simply good publicity for a newspapers brand, he said the web version has opened up a world of markets to Le Jour and, "it permits us to have a global presence and visibility."

It is therefore clear that the expat reader opens up a whole new market of readers and revenue to Africa's newspapers. For those organisations that are reticent about connecting with the web, they need to be aware they are ignoring a growing market waiting to be exploited. The African web news market is already jostling with competitors, so if they do not leap now, they could miss out completely.

The Daily Mirror announced that The Independent's "Fair Tips, Fair Pay" campaign featured "foul play" because it considered that the paper was using research previously conducted by the Mirror.

"Nobody has nicked anyone else's research. This is complete bollocks." said Roger Alton, The Independent's editor.
 
The campaign exposes employers who don't allow waiters to keep their tips and encourages the government to put a stop to a "loophole" in minimum wage legislation, wrote the PressGazette.co.uk.

The Independent joined the campaign that the trade union Unite was running for some years and which the Mirror joined in April, according to Andrew Penman, the Mirror's investigations editor.

"This is a long-standing campaign that The Indy is trying to pass off as its own after it has already been successful. It's like joining the Allied side in the Second World War on 28 April 1945," said Penman.

Penman also mentioned that The Independent's campaign was released shortly after Prime Minister Gordon Brown was announced to be fixing the minimum wage situation.

Trinity Mirror announced it is developing a mobile site for two national papers, including the Daily Mirror and the Daily Record and 12 regional newspapers.

Each publication will have a print version, an online edition and a mobile site, which shows that the newspaper industry is a "growing multiplatform media business", according to Rick Gleave, head of Trinity Mirror interactive and mobile.

Nokia and Bluestar mobile (responsible for New York Post's site launch) helped develop the sites.

Regional newspapers to have their sites developed include the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, the Newcastle Journal, the Teeside Evening Gazette, the Liverpool Daily Post, Liverpool Echo, the Huddersfield Examiner, the Daily Post Wales, the Western Mail, the South Wales Echo, the Birmingham Mail, the Birmingham Post, and the Coventry Telegraph.
