ABC planning to initiate paywall for online content by June

ABC recently announced plans to initiate a paywall for some of its online content starting this June, hoping to alleviate some of its financial troubles and increase revenue. The announcement comes in the wake of ABC's restructuring plans and its decision to eliminate 300 to 400 jobs through buyout propositions.

ABC's initiation of a paywall should come as no surprise to those watching media news over the past year. Beginning with the success of the Financial Times and Wall Street Journal's moves to paid content, NewsCorporation, MediaNews and the New York Times followed in their path with plans to erect paywalls by 2011. Just this week, the Washington Post announced its launch of Capital Business, a business weekly for subscribers only.

These changes result from a steep decline in ad revenue for online newspapers over the past year, with American newspapers earning 17% less from advertising on the web than they had a year earlier, according to the Economist. The Washington Post alone lost four percent of its revenue in the fourth quarter of 2009, and new paid content plans hope to alleviate some of the financial stress of the past year.

The 8.8 earthquake that ravaged central Chile on February 27 has also wreaked havoc on the newspapers that operate in the region. While some continued to print with borrowed electric generators and improvised newsrooms, some were forced to halt publishing for a number of days. Most of the local newspapers websites' in the most affected areas were down in the aftermath of the quake. But, even though the worst seems to be over for this battered nation's newspapers, damage to the country's largest paper factories could become a big problem for not only Chilean but also other south American newspapers.

As aftershocks still rattled central Chile, the Editors Weblog spoke to the General Manager of the Asociación Nacional de la Prensa of Chile, Ignacio Muñoz, about how the earthquake has affected Chilean newspapers and how they have coped with the difficulties of reporting under extraordinary circumstances.

BBC and Global Voices announce partnership

The BBC will be teaming up with the non-profit blogging network of citizen journalists, Global Voices, to offer a "different range of perspectives and commentary from around the world," according to the BBC.

Content from Global Voices will be incorporated into the BBC's SuperPower season coverage, a special series on the Internet and the impact it has on our lives.

The BBC will be selecting and linking to some Global Voices stories, as well as asking GV editors to give their views on how the mainstream media handle the news. The editor of the BBC's News website, Steve Herrmann, explained that he believes Global Voices and the wide range of opinions they feature could add an "interesting dimension to some of (the BBC's) news coverage."

Tindle looks local to bring in new revenue streams, with launch of four new titles

The Tindle Newspapers Group, publisher of around 230 local and regional papers in the UK, is to launch four weekly local newspapers in London, the Guardian has reported.

Three of the four weekly titles were available from last Friday and have been identified as the Edmonton Herald, East Barnet Advertiser and Winchmore Hill Herald. The print runs are very small at 3,000 copies of each paper, and the first issues were distributed door-to-door. Specific details regarding the fourth paper, set to launch in a couple of weeks, are as yet unknown.

WaPo launches paid iPhone app

Unlike many other newspapers with partner websites, the Washington Post isn't building paywalls around its online offering. Indeed, so set against the principle, CEO of Washington Post Co, Don Graham, confirmed the promise of free online news in a public appearance on Tuesday.

It's not a sentiment that extends to its newly developed iPhone application however. PaidContent has reported that WaPo is to charge $1.99 for a year of customised access and offline reading. If the price appears minimal, then bear in mind that it may increase after the first year.

The Huffington Post tackles Religion and College life

The Huffington Post has been keeping quite busy lately - just this week, the news and commentary website added not only one but two new sections to its online repertoire: Religion and College.

The newly added Religion section will feature a wide range of discussions about religion, spirituality, and their relationship with our daily lives.

In an article to introduce HuffPo Religion, Huffington Post co-founder and editor-in-chief, Arianna Huffington explained that users can expect discussions about the relationship between religion and science, the role of religion in attaining self-fulfillment, the ways religion is portrayed in pop culture, and the overall effect religion has on domestic and international politics on the new site.

Newspaper Publishers Association seeks to block BBC's all-new iPhone apps

The Newspaper Publishers Association (the representative body for all big UK publishers) is stirring up a backlash against the BBC, following news that the corporation is to launch three iPhone apps from April 2010. The NPA is adamant that such a move will step on the toes of traditional print publications seeking to generate revenue in the mobile news arena.

In a staunch statement emailed to paidContent:UK, the NPA's director Director David Newell wrote:

"Not for the first time, the BBC is preparing to muscle into a nascent market and trample over the aspirations of commercial news providers.

iPad deals with publishers face obstacles

The arrival of the iPad has generated much optimism in media circles that hope it will revitalize a struggling industry, but so far, there has been much talk over what the device could do, but little evidence that shows newspapers will actually benefit from the device.

In fact, newspaper and magazine publishers have not yet agreed upon the key issue of sharing subscription revenue, as they consider deals to offer digital versions of their publications on Apple's newly released tablet, the Financial Times reports.

This vital piece of the puzzle will decide whether publishers will succeed in cashing in on the iPad.

Despite dwindling resources, newsrooms persist in fight for freedom of information

As companies slash newsroom budgets, they are also scaling back on one of their civic duties: legal battles to gain access to government information, reports The New York Times.

But while many regional newspapers are choosing to cut expenses on lawyers, asking them to work pro bono, another trend paints the opposite story, say press advocates and First Amendment lawyers.

Some companies including Hearst and The Associated Press have been quietly stepping up their legal efforts, by doing more of the work in-house, utilizing their in-house lawyers and being more aggressive in states where they can recoup legal fees and the federal level, which also allows plaintiffs in such access cases to sue for legal fees when they win.

Journalism Online's e-commerce service for publishers, Press+, has begun to release more details about the online payment system that allows publishers to implement a variety of payment methods for their digital content, according to eMedia Vitals.

As newspapers ponder the move to making readers pay for access to news content online, with many announcing that they will start to do so soon, the costs of running a newsroom and the value of news articles take center stage. With many wanting us to pay for content, we cannot help but to wonder how much that content is really worth.

Newspaper launch: Delhi awaits the The Sunday Guardian

Acclaimed Indian journalist M.J. Akbar is planning to launch an English-language weekly newspaper in New Delhi, Mediamughals reports. The all-new Sunday Guardian is in no way linked with the British newspaper, The Guardian, although the paper will be available in London under the name of India on Sunday, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Akbar is the author of a considerable number of successful books, and launched his own fortnightly political magazine Covert under MJP Media early last year. The media veteran has been reluctant to provide further information regarding the launch, although sources close to him told the WSJ that Akbar himself will act as Editor-in-Chief, supported by a 30 strong team.

Video cameras for reporters as newspaper moves into the digital age

All reporters at the Journal-Register Co. (JRC) will get video cameras, under an ambitious plan to bring the newspaper into the digital age, the company's 3,100 employees have been told. The company's new CEO John Paton has also told staff that they now work for a 'media company', not a 'newspaper company'. Appropriately enough, he announced the news in a seven-minute slideshow, emailed companywide, the New Haven Independent reports.

"We're not looking to make any cuts," Paton told the Independent. "We need to improve [local coverage]. We don't need to make it worse." The company, which runs 19 daily and 150 other newspapers, including the flagship New Haven Register, filed for bankruptcy last February.

Guardian's Rusbridger: 'iPad could produce significant revenue streams'

Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger told Reuters that "if we get the right functionality and design," the iPad could "produce interesting, significant revenue streams," according to PaidContent.

Because developing an application for the iPad will not require any different skills from the ones required to launch an iPhone app, news publishers that have had success with iPhone apps, are now looking to cash in on the iPad.

YouCommNews: public interest journalism in Australia

It's a question that can get lost in all the talk of business models and content creation: how might journalism best serve the public?

In Australia, the latest group to ponder this is The Foundation for Public Interest Journalism, directed by a group of journalists, editors, academics and members of the community. Part of the Institute for Social Research at Swinburne University in Melbourne, it is setting up a project called YouCommNews, modeled on the American site Spot.Us, which will allow the audience to commission the stories they want to see.

Lebedev to bring in billionaire partner for Independent deal?

Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev, in exclusive talks to purchase the Independent newspapers, may attempt to bring an Egyptian partner into the deal, according to reports in The Guardian.

Lebedev is trying to persuade Egyptian billionaire Samih Sawiris to join him in investing in The Independent and Independent on Sunday, according to sources close to the deal. The details of the proposed agreement are unknown.

Former editor takes on Birmingham Post with web launch

This week, independent regional business news website, TheBusinessDesk, launched a third regional edition in Birmingham today with Marc Reeves as its new editor, Press Gazette reports.

Reeves, the former editor of the business and public affairs daily, the Birmingham Post, left the newspaper in January after it was turned into a weekly. His new position will place him in direct competition with his old paper.

Chicago Tribune announces format changes

The Chicago Tribune announced yesterday that it would be implementing several changes in content and format as it prepares to roll out a narrower page size. Beginning on February 8th, the paper will become one inch narrower. The length of the broadsheet will remain the same, as will the "body type," or font size for news stories.

"There will be some adjustments such as smaller headlines and photos in places, but the content of the paper largely will remain the same," said Editor, Gerould W. Kern, in a letter to readers.

The past few years has seen the explosive growth of social networking sites Twitter and Facebook, and a dramatic downturn in advertising revenue that has set about ravaging the newspaper industry. PoynterOnline has now reported new enterprises between the two industries however, which could prove profitable for both.

Few news outlets are without their own Twitter account these days, using the site's micro-blogging capabilities as a means to distribute stories and attract a wider audience. The Austin American-Statesman is using theirs to sell tweets to local business, which can advertise their enterprises on the newspaper's Twitter account.

The Guardian website has done it again - the newspaper's website has just announced it has achieved its second record-breaking month in a row with nearly 37 million unique users for December, according to its website.

This surpassed its November record by 3.32%, according to figures released today by the Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic.

The new staff are in the coverage areas of business, finance and markets, and will report to the US finance and business editor Francesco Guerrera.

Washington Post and Hindustan Times to share content

News and reviews from the Washington Post are now published in the Hindustan Times, under a content-sharing agreement reached by the two organisations.

The Hindustan Times, the second-most read English language newspaper in India, will publish a special section with the stories from the Post. It will include reports from the paper's global bureaux, opinion pieces, book reviews and columnists. The option is also available to share content from the Post's magazine, Newsweek.

Want to learn more about the use of video storytelling in journalism? A new course, offered by none other than The New York Times, may be just the thing.

The New York Times Company has been offering non-credit distance education courses for the past two years. From this week, in conjunction with some universities, it will offer courses for credit towards certificate programs.

Director of education for the Times Felice Nudelman told Inside Higher Ed that online education was a robust area. "It is, for many institutions, a profit center," she said. "And it's an exciting way to bring together all the content from The New York Times and expertise from our newsroom, and expertise of college and university faculty."
