The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) reports a re-launch of IJNet.org, its online portal that links global journalists and media organizations through social networks, discussion spaces, forums and news about journalism.

The re-designed site will offer:

-Networking tools in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Persian and Arabic.
-The ability to create advanced profiles where work activity can be highlighted, news can be posted and other journalists or media outlets may be invited to join.
-Users can interact by joining discussions or posting on IJNet Answers.
-Users can search for each other by any information that is provided to a profile, such as an e-mail address or location.
-The Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) section that provides industry news

IJNet currently over 18,000 worldwide subscribers and receives around 20,000 unique visitors monthly.

Lippo Group, a substantial Indonesian conglomerate, announces the launch of The Jakarta Globe, an English language daily newspaper that will be available both in print and online.

Bhimanto Suwastoyo, who worked with the AFP for over 20 years, is to be the paper's deputy editor. The editorial team also includes Ahmad Pathoni, who previously held senior positions at both AFP and Reuters, and A. Lin Neumann, former executive editor of the Hong Kong Standard and editor-in-chief of South Korean daily JoongAng.

The Globe will be released in the next two months and will be aimed at both Indonesians and expatriates. It will receive funding through advertisements and subscriptions.

The paper intends to be in competition with The Jakarta Post, Indonesia's prominent English-language paper.

Guardian.co.uk is still the most popular UK newspaper website, with 20,622,063 unique users last month, compared to 20,499,858 in June. This may be largely due to the sports-focused coverage that the paper featured in that month, such as the Tour de France, Wimbledon and English Test cricket, reports Guardian.co.uk.  

Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic (ABCe) figures show that Guardian.co.uk had a 28.4% increase in uniques since July 2007. Meanwhile, page impressions jumped by 1.8% to 186,430,603 in July.

Telegraph.co.uk ranks second, with 18,746,025 unique users in July, having dropped by 4.9% from 19,712,622 in June. Mail Online remains in third place with 18,705,552 uniques, a 16.8% growth from 16,015,211 in June.

Year-on-year, both Telegraph.co.uk and Mail Online experienced growth in uniques since July 2007, the figures being 108.5% and 57.7%, respectively.

Sun Online has a 69% growth in uniques from July 2007 and a 3% growth since last month, reaching 15,972,490.

Telegraph.co.uk had a decrease in page impressions from 151,857,375 to 140,318,137 while Dailymail.co.uk's page impressions surged to 143,587,842 in July from 119,483,455 in June. Mail Online, meanwhile, had 143,587,842 in July.

Times Online's and The Independent site's page views were at a record high of 123,978,303 and 27,768,695, respectively.

Independent.co.uk had a 9% plunge since last month in uniques, reaching 6,588,929 while Mirror Group Digital uniques decreased by 5% since June to 5,177,230.

UK users are more valuable in terms of advertising revenue. However, the ABCe figures show that UK audience decreased since June for Mirror.co.uk and Telegraph.co.uk.

Mirror.co.uk had a drop of 73,000 to nearly 3 million uniques in the UK, whereas Telegraph.co.uk had a fall of 80,000 to 6.5 million.

Guardian.co.uk's and Times Online uniques in the UK increased to 8.5 million and 5.9 million, respectively. The figure rose for Mail Online and Sun Online to 5.5 million uniques for both titles.

The figures are expected to have an explosive growth this month, following coverage of the Beijing Olympic Games.

As more UK newspapers get rid of sub-editors for print and online editions, the status of subs as a "luxury" is being debated. The Diary of a Wordsmith blog wrote that not only do subs correct typos and punctuation mistakes in an article, but that they are important legal assets.

"Quite apart from the problems arising when you try to edit your own work, many journalists do not write great English (and rely on the subs desk to do rewrites) and most do not have the comprehensive understanding of media law that subs do, but have only a limited working knowledge of libel law," wrote Wordsmith.

"As news becomes collaborative, editors will need to assemble networks from among staff and the public; that makes them community organisers. I also believe editors should play educator, helping to improve the work of the network," wrote Jeff Jarvis in his BuzzMachine blog.

The Weblog spoke to Jim Roberts, Digital Editor at The New York Times, and Martin Gottlieb, who was appointed to the newly created position of Editor, Global Edition.

How newspapers can become international brands, the NYT joins the race

Until now, the Times hasn't specifically catered to overseas advertisers and readers.

"We need to be agile," said IHT publisher Stephen Dunbar-Johnson, "to compete much more aggressively, nose to nose, with The Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and anybody else who is competing for our readers and advertisers."

No doubt that the Times actually borrowed the continuous news outpost idea from the aforementioned competitors, which have been relying on their foreign bureaus to provide round the clock coverage.

The staff memo reaffirmed the NYT's "ambitious plans to expand in the region (Asia), particularly in India." In June, the IHT announced a partnership with the India-based Deccan Chronicle to print the Tribune's world business section in the Financial Chronicle.

With the rise of digital publishing, many news organizations are seeking to grow a previously inaccessible international readership by:

- launching a print edition abroad: several papers have rolled out editions away from home this past year, such as the FT's recently launched Middle East edition in Abu Dhabi, WSJ's partnership with business paper Mint in India, the Daily Mail's partnership with India Today to publish the Mail Today, or The Times of London's Polish edition.

- investing in an online international section: In Germany, referential weekly Der Spiegel launched an English-language International edition on its website in 2004. Five fulltime staffers are dedicated to translating Der Spiegel's content and rewriting it with an international perspective, as well as doing their own international-minded original reporting (the full case study is featured in Trends in Newsrooms 2008). The Guardian adopted a different approach, by launching a separate, foreign-based, US website, Guardian America. The Guardian is reportedly considering similar ventures in other regions.

- simply reinforcing their focus on international news in their regular coverage: the Daily Telegraph's website in the UK, which was neck to neck with the Guardian in terms of traffic in April, claims nearly two thirds of its visitors are from overseas. A well-indexed website helps to brings in a significant number of 'light' international users through search engines.

Merging "co-branded" websites but not print: a branding issue

The NYT's approach is a combination of the first two strategies: the print IHT now serves as The Times' 'global edition' (see picture), while maintaining its trademark brand name. With the proposed online merger, the NYT could also follow the second route, by hosting an international edition online, without having to extensively change its workflows (see Part 1).

The rationale to merge the websites is clearly explained in the memo: according to WebTrends, NYT's website boasts a strong international audience and 58 million global users, compared to iht.com's seven million.

"The global landscape for online news is highly competitive, making scale, speed and resources essential to success. Therefore we have determined that the best future online for the IHT and the NYT globally is through a joint international presence," said the memo.

However, the memo doesn't explicitly say why this won't be the case in print:

"The IHT should become the international print edition of the NYT, whether it is formally branded that way or not."

The main issue at stake is one of branding. "In print, there have been at least a couple of studies that show that among Tribune newspaper readers there is a great identification with the brand, that the brand means something to readers," said Gottlieb.

"More than the name, what accompanies the name, an international perspective, a sense of calling the best stories from The Times and augmenting them with unique reporting," was a combination that many readers liked.

As news organizations seek to grow their international reach, this consideration probably holds true for many that have established a reputable brand name on a local or national scale. However strong the brand name, its association with a particular place or country can potentially play against that news outlet on the international scene.

Currently, blogging arrests are at a record high, the BBC reports. 64 bloggers have been detained from mostly China, Egypt and Iran since 2003 according to a University of Washington annual report. In 2006-2007, the number of arrested bloggers tripled to 36.

Blogging has a "political importance", since issues include exposure of corruption, human rights violations, "suppression of protests", criticism of public policies and questioning political entities. Arrests tend to multiply during times of "political uncertainty" such as during elections.

A World Information Access (WIA) report concluded that imprisonment usually follows arrest. The report says that 15 months is the average prison sentence, the longest being eight years.

The Committee to Protect Bloggers claims that 344 people were detained as a result of blogging in Burma, even though WIA cannot confirm.

Around 30 countries worldwide implement restrictions on online activities. According to the report, restrictions on blogging also take place in Canada, France, Britain and the US.

Elections in China, Pakistan, Iran and the US make it more likely that the number of bloggers arrested will increase.

Even as online media consumption habits change, traditional journalists train in new media and new departments emerge, incorporating video journalism continues to be a challenge. How long should the videos be? Should they support text stories or be considered separate pieces entirely? How do you deal with translation? Or translate the complexities of a story, even in the same language?

The Poynter Institute recently caught up with Emmy-nominated video journalist, Travis Fox, to discuss best practices in creating web-based video.

What follows is an edited transcript of what appears on the Poynter Institute's website.  

Al Tompkins: How does video help this story?

Travis Fox: I think you're getting at the relationship between the video and the related article? ... Many of my pieces are aired on PBS, so they need to stand on their own, with their own reporting and context. This is a challenge for us on the Web, because we don't want to totally duplicate the reporting that's in the article, but at the same time we need to provide enough context in the video so when viewers come first (or only) to the video they fully understand the story. It also makes an interesting study of the differences of reporting for video and articles ... but that's another question for another time.

This story could be so complicated that nobody would read or watch it, but you simplified it to "Rwandian Women Emerge As Business Force," which is a story that has appeal far beyond those interested in foreign affairs. How do you think about the focusing and clarifying process when you are working on a story?

Fox: I would hope that all of the pieces I do have appeal beyond those interested in foreign affairs, or whatever topic I'm working on. It's difficult to go into the kind of detail you're talking about in short-form video, period. What works well in video -- namely characters and emotions -- has universal appeal no matter the story. When I do a complicated story (and every story is complicated), I have to fully understand the nuances of the story to know how to produce it in video from. This means I'm often doing interviews on background and doing interviews without the camera rolling just to find the right character to base the story around. It's a kind of casting process. In some ways, it's two processes: the journalism and the video production.

People always ask you about your gear and editing/transmitting process, so let's get that one out of the way.

Fox: Yes, let's do. I use the Sony high-definition video camera, but hope my editors soon buy me that new Sony that doesn't have tapes so I don't have to capture anymore. I edit on a Mac laptop with Final Cut Pro. I almost always transmit via hotel Internet, but if I'm in an out-of-the-way place I use a satellite phone transmitter.

A lot of online photojournalists like to use natural-sound-only pieces, but increasingly, it seems, your stories look more like a marriage of National Public Radio and documentary TV. When is it best to use a reporter track, and when is it more effective not to?

Fox: Thank you for that. I think it's always more effective to produce pieces without narration, but it's more difficult for a couple of reasons. First, most of the pieces I produce are in a foreign language, and I've found a translated audio track doesn't have the same connection with viewers as one in English, even if the content of the voice is the same. Much about the settle nuances of delivery are lost in translation. Secondly, I often find good characters with good stories to tell, but they just don't give you the sound bites you need to build a bed of quotes that takes the place of narration. Often these characters aren't concise enough, or their pacing is too slow. Lastly, I feel that I'm increasingly trying to tell more complicated stories -- ones that are based less around a central character -- and those require me to write narration to tie it all together.

What is the next big step online video will take that will improve journalism?

Fox: One thing I think we should be looking at is video going offline. Let me explain: We will see the Internet used more as a means of delivery, as opposed to a medium (the Web). At washingtonpost.com, we've already seen this in the huge increase of traffic to our various video podcasts on iTunes. Not that podcasts are the future, but the technology of delivering video to several devices, like your phone -- and especially your TV -- is. ... In short, it's the hub model. We are becoming a production company that creates work that goes out in many directions like spokes on a wheel -- to your computer, your phone, your TV. And let us not forget, your morning newspaper.

This piece is close to 10 minutes long. What are you learning about the ideal length for video stories? What keeps people watching online?

Fox: I get this question often, and almost always from my friends in TV, where time is everything. This is one of the big differences between Web video and TV. We talk about pacing, about character development, context -- not so much about time. That's not to say we don't care about videos dragging on or becoming redundant, we do, but we let the story dictate the time, not the time dictate the story. We hope quality video journalism keeps the viewers watching.

On TV, if viewers lose interest with a story, they change the channel and you've lost them. If viewers lose interest with a video online, they often just click on the next video, or maybe go to an article or blog on the same site. We haven't lost them as viewers like on TV.

Also, the advertising model right now is that the ad runs before the video. From a business viewpoint, if viewers watch two minutes or 10 minutes, it's the same advertising impression. Of course, less viewing adversely affects the important "time on site" metric, so we'd prefer they stay and watch the whole video.

I'm not trying to say that every video we do should be a long documentary. We need to have a balance between all the types of videos we do, but saying that every video should be a minute and 30 seconds long doesn't make sense online. The Web is a different beast, and the more we learn about viewers' habits -- which are still developing as technology like podcasting changes -- the better we can meet their needs. We just need to be careful not to apply the same technical standards from any traditional media to new media.

The 2008 Newsroom Barometer gathered the answers of more than 700 editors and senior news executives from 120 countries, and was conducted online in March 2008.

This was a relatively big increase from the 435 senior news executives who answered the Newsroom Barometer last year.

The goal is to conduct a Newsroom Barometer every year, in order to compare and contrast the newspaper industry's trends over a longer period of time.

Here's a quick view of this year's respondents:

Job Title / others:

A near majority of the 713 respondents were editors-in-chief (320), and there were 120 managing editors. All respondents were senior news executives, there were neither journalists nor managers, as was the case in 2006.

Three quarters of respondents were male, underlining a still existent gender gap among top newspaper editorial positions. Circulation at 28% of the surveyed newspapers decreased last year, compared to 39% whose circulation increased. These numbers are both reassuring at a time of widespread doom and gloom reports, but they also reveal the transition print newspapers are going through.

Age:

There were more younger respondents (23.5% under 40) than in 2006, although senior editors (age above 50) still constituted 42% of all respondents. The split is representative of the age range of newsroom editors throughout the world.

Type of newspaper:

Compared to 2006, this year's newspapers were more representative of the industry as a whole, as two thirds of respondents came from regional or local papers, compared to a third from national or international titles.

Print circulation:

Many editors from smaller newspapers participated in this year's survey. Nearly half of respondents worked for papers with a print circulation of less than 50,000 copies. 19% of respondents worked for papers with a circulation superior to 200,000 copies.

Website traffic:

For 66% of respondents, their daily website traffic was below 200,000 unique visitors per day, which is also representative of the world press on the whole. 6% still didn't have a website, compared to 9% last year.

More about methodology

The Newsroom Barometer is a purely online survey through the Zogby website (www.zogby.com). The poll was accessible by invitation only and was conducted in eight languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian and Japanese). To avoid answers from people who were not senior news executives, a tailored email was sent to editors-in-chief using the World Editors Forum database (www.worldeditorsforum.org), which counts 7,000 senior news executives' emails.

The Guardian won the sports coverage of the year award at the Sports Industry Awards in the UK.

Other contenders included the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Times and The Times, but the Guardian was chosen for its 'synergy between multi-platforms.'

Among the Guardian's strengths was its multimedia coverage of former English football team manager Steve McClaren getting sacked after England failed to qualify for the upcoming Euro Cup.

For this event, apart from print and online articles, the Guardian featured rolling news, comments and audio footage online. Praises were also given to the Guardian's use of Hawk Eye technology - which is used for digital replays of sports games (see here) - for its cricket coverage last summer.

Are online-only websites the solution for publishers and editors to offer daily news to minority groups at low cost? The Tribune de Genève and 24 Heures, published by Swiss group Edipresse, launched yesterday an English-language, online-only, daily publication. Swisster.ch is the first media outlet to target the English-speaking community in Switzerland.

Swisster.ch's headquarters are integrated within the newsrooms of the Tribune de Genève and 24 Heures. The site will be updated five times per week.

The online daily will cater to the 100,000 large English-speaking population in Switzerland, and target managers, executives, educated elites and celebrities who come to live in Switzerland, particularly in Geneva and Neuchâtel.

Swisster.ch will describe and comment upon cultural, business, political and social life in Switzerland and its French-speaking region more specifically.

The online-only route seems to have been successful for Edipress, which had recently launched another online news site (www.nashagazeta.ch) that targeted the Russian-speaking population of the country.

Digital Editor of The Journal in Newcastle Graeme Whitfield embarked on a quest to write a dictionary of 'English-journalese', or misused language that seems to appear in newspapers but not real life in February 2008.

His online blog has attracted visitors from the UK and America who contribute to the ever-growing dictionary.

Whitfield said: "It does seem to have caught on. It got picked up by a few news aggregators like del.icio.us, where users put stuff online that they like, so we got a flurry of responses from America. I think it may be a bit of a guilty pleasure."

The dictionary began with "tot" meaning child ("What a nice tot you have"; "How old is your tot now?" would not be used in real life) or "slam" instead of criticize (Would you tell a friend: "That's a terrible decision. I slam it."), but now includes words such as "pact" for political deals and "snarled" when referring to traffic.

"Despite my efforts to stop people using these words, it hasn't worked," said Whitfield. "You still see 'tot' in the tabloids all the time. But it's nice to start a debate."
