Public trust in journalists has fallen significantly, reports a YouGov poll published in the British Journalism Review.

Although trends within the industry remain unchanged - with broadcast journalists considered more trustworthy than print reporters - all but one of the seven categories of journalist have lost ground to the trust figures reported five years ago.

Trust in broadsheet journalism is down 22% to 43%, in mid-market journalism 18% to 40%, and in local journalism figures have dropped 20% to rest at 18%. While trust in other occupations, including police and teachers, has also declined, none so dramatically as journalists.

"The only group to emerge unscathed were the red-top journalists, whose reputation was so low it could hardly sink further," said University of Westminster professor of communications Steven Barnett.

YouGov's survey shows a marked difference from the results of silimar surveying in the US. The Readership Institute's 2007 survey found that while overall trust in journalism is declining, 75% of respondents still trust their local daily newspaper's reporting.

New research by MediaVest suggests that readers trust print more than the web in almost every area. A previous poll had found that Americans are losing trust in news sources.

- There remains very little repetition between the audiences for print publications and their online companions. Duplication went from 1% to 6% for every category except entertainment, where some titles reached 10% of duplication.

 - 79% who were dual magazine and digital users believe that print titles should deliver something different with their online extensions. Only 44% said they strongly believed that publishers' sites really offer something unique.

- 12% of respondents strongly believe that a publisher's site could easily replace the print product within the next five years, which is a comforting statistic for newspapers.

The new Harris Poll has found that:
- more than 50% of Americans polled now do not trust the press
- 2/3 of Americans believe traditional journalism is "out of touch" with what readers want from their news, similar to the We Media/Zogby Interactive poll findings.

However, other forms of media, except the Internet, are also declining in popularity:
- 6% do not trust news on televisio
- 1/3 of Americans do not trust radio news

Though only 4% do not trust Internet news, Americans choose other medias for political news:
- 70% watch their local television news
- 66% watch cable TV news programs such as CNN and FOX
- 65% still read local papers for political news

Despite the growing preference of reading news on websites, 32% of polled Americans never visit a newspaper website.

With all this talk about ethical lapses in photojournalism, one thing is clear: it is easier to pledge yourself to a value system than it is to live by one, especially in a fiercely competitive, mercurial industry.  Such is the environment facing the code of ethics proposed by the US-based Society for News Design (SND) earlier this year.  For, although commendable, I can’t help wondering how it is going to trickle down to the newspapers and websites who need it most.

 

A recent international poll reveals that people around the world trust the media more than they trust their governments. The poll, conducted by the organization Globescan with the BBC, Reuters and US think tank The Media Center, spanned 10 countries and some 10,230 people asking them opinions on the media on issues of trust.

An interesting and scathing article from Thomas Kostigen on Market Watch, who asserts that journalists "should have to face civil or criminal consequences like everyone else" for ethical breaches. They should be "fined, penalized an even prosecuted", he says.

According to a recent Gallup poll, Americans have somewhat regained trust in the mass media. According to the survey, conducted September 12-15, 13% of respondents have a 'great deal' and 37% a 'fair amount' of 'trust and confidence in the mass media'. On the other side, 37% have 'not very much' and 12% 'none at all'. Those figures show a slight increase in trust and confidence that respondents have in mass media. (The question was: "In general, how much trust and confidence do you have in the mass media - such as newspapers, T.V. and radio - when it comes to reporting the news fully, accurately, and fairly - a great deal, a fair amount, not very much, or none at all?)

However, when looking at figures from the last years, the level of trust is still relatively low. In 1972, when the question was asked for the first time, 68% had a 'great deal' or a 'fair amount' of trust in the media, compared to 49% this year. Also in recent years, from 1997 to 2003, this figure was always higher than 50%. This year's result is therefore only an improvement compared to last year's low result of 44%. However, it could be a sign of hope.

In its most recent annual survey of “public confidence in major institutions” in the US, Gallup found that public trust in newspapers and television news has reached an all-time low, reports Editor and Publisher.   According to the poll, confidence in newspapers has declined from %37 to %28 since 2000.  Of those surveyed, 24% said they have “very little” confidence in newspapers.  But 46% said they have “some confidence” and 28% had “strong confidence” in newspapers.

A recent article from Pacific News Service emphasizes the increasing popularity of the Ethnic Media in North America. According to the first multilingual poll conducted to better understand the role of ethnic media, 80 % of the 64 million adults that labeled themselves as “ethnic” in the latest American census read at least one issue from the ethnic media in the last month.  That equals almost 1 in 4 adult Americans.  Thanks to global communication, ethnic Americans can now retain a stronger sense of their ethnic identity, and can better trust and have easier access to media that reflect their origins.  Yet the poll also found that while respondents turned towards ethnic media for community and home-country reporting, they still read the mainstream media to read about national politics.  An association of ethnic media, New California Media sponsored the poll along with the Center for American Progress and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund. 

On a similar note, CNW Group reports that Toronto’s multimedia Nova Corporations has greatly increased the circulation and dealer network of its three times weekly Spanish Language Newspaper, Correo Canadiense. The paper that started in 2001 will now circulate 4 times more editions than its closest competitor, with 20,000 copies for sale daily.  And the dealer network carrying and selling the paper to the public has been increased to over 2,000.  Correo Candadiense’s expansion is part of Multimedia Nova’s plans to extend its reach to what it calls “The New Mainstream” of Toronto.

Philip Meyer, Knight chair of Journalism at the University of North Carolina and the author of “The Vanishing Newspaper,” recently wrote an article for Nieman Watchdog which claims news of Americans not believing newspaper journalism is not exactly true. According to various sources, up to 45% of Americans don’t believe anything they read in the paper. In fact, Meyer says that the rating system, developed by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, has been exaggerated upon by journalists writing stories of newspaper doom. In reality, only about 13% of Americans responded that they “believe almost nothing of what (newspapers) say.” Despite the free interpretation of the Pew poll, Meyer points out that reader trust is still declining. Readers who said they find newspaper reporting credible was down to 55% last year from 84% in 1985.
