The Sports Rights Owners Coalition and the recently created New Media Coalition are disputing their respective interests in the broadcast and the sales of video and photo content taken on sport events.

Economically, print publishing is very different today than it used to be. There is massive amounts of free content on the Web, content that hasn’t really changed that much in general, or in value. It’s the value of the distribution of that content that has changed.

These are often company-specific ventures, but in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, the industry is now joining forces in the ‘Flemish E-publishing Trends’-project. This four-year R&D-effort will create the conditions for a varied and solid e-publishing practice, with new roles and portfolios for the incumbent newspaper companies. The changeover from hardcopy to soft publishing is not an easy one. The FLEET deliverables will facilitate this transition.

Friday 24^th of November, a good 80 Dutch and Flemish editors and researchers gathered in the European Journalism Centre, Maastricht, Netherlands, to assess and discuss several prototypes of novel newspaper products or services. All are web-based one way or another, and ready for the Web 2.0 publishing environments. The in total six demonstrators feature remote reporting tools, video content based on strategic alliances with non-journalistic partners, e-paper trials and online reader communities. Most were developed in close cooperation with specialised R&D centres. Together, the prototypes reveal the contours of the future electronic newspaper.
Al least half of the demonstrators will make it to real applications, the other are subject to further testing in living lab conditions.
General conclusion of the event: we need further experimentation to capture the essence of digital presence. In the conference report, the applications as well as the editors’ appraisal are described more in detail.

The user content generated “wiki” revolution is starting to spread beyond the Internet.  Publishing group Pearson PLC is teaming up with top business schools, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School, to created a user content generated book.

Publishers offered an olive branch to Internet search engines such as Google Friday amid bitter legal tussles with

A task force of global and European publishers organizations, led by the World Association of Newspapers, has agreed to work together to examine the options open to publishers to assert their rights to recognition and recompense, and to ultimately improve the relationships between content creators/producers and news aggregators and search engines.

Mobile image taking devices for the everyday person, already ubiquitous, have added eye-witness value to newspaper content over the past year, especially during the Asian tsunami, the London bombings and Hurricane Katrina.  But the legalities behind use of citizen material have yet to be defined which is causing a stir at some papers.

Although print is thriving in some Asian countries, newspapers are implementing the Internet and other technologies in their daily publishing. Below are some ideas about Internet use and young readers from the Ad Asia conference.

Good debate initiated by paidcontent.org two days ago: "What is a media company today?". Behind this question, another one: Is the dissemination of content more important than the content production? With the on-going trend of the "daily me" (news where I want it and when I want it), it becomes more important to find a quick answer than to find the right answer! Ten years ago, when you were a "content provider", you produced it and you disseminated it. Now, with Google and topix.net, there is a split... and a sort of struggle between creation and circulation.

Here are the first answers from paidcontent.org: 1) Tolman Geffs, Managing Director, The Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc.: "Media companies bring content to audiences. That's what Google does, with the content comprising unique aggregated search results. Aggregation may seem like a new form of content, but directories have been around forever. Yes, Google is also a navigation tool. So is the telephone, but that does not mean that yellow pages directories are not media. They are, and so is Google." 2) A former journalist turned technologist at a major media company: "I define a media company as an organization whose core competency is the CREATION of information content which is sold as a 'product' and disseminated to information consumers via one or more publishing technologies, including print publishing, radio & TV broadcasting, and internet publishing. ... I feel that CREATION is the key to defining a media company, as CREATORS and their content really define a media company's position in the marketplace and their corporate culture." 3) David M. Scott, Freshspot Marketing LLC: "A media company should be defined not by technology, nor business model (advertising-supported vs. paid), but rather by the audience. Any property that successfully aggregates an audience through content is a media company. Based on this definition, I believe that Amazon.com is a highly successful media company because it aggregates an audience by successfully delivering content from book publishers and product manufacturers (in the form of product definitions and specifications) as well as reviews of books and other products contributed by consumers."

Creation less important than dissemination? Not good for our ego, but maybe good for the reader's ego. And my fear in this (interesting) debate is that media analysts just become stock exchange analysts!
