roxana.jpgAmerican journalist, Roxanna Saberi was sentenced to eight years at Evin prison in Tehran, accused of spying on the Iranian government. At first she was arrested in January for buying alcohol, the Foreign Ministry then said she was illegally reporting without press credentials and in April was put on trial for spying. The trial was short and behind closed doors.

According to  a World Association of Newspapers press release, "more that 70 journalists were killed world-wide last year, at least 670 were arrested, and 125 remain in prison." At least two journalists have died in Evin Prison in the past six years.
Anybody who wants to react can on World Press Freedom Day, March 3. The World Association of Newspaper has also written a letter to the president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, asking to free Saberi.

In light of these events, the World Association of Newspapers has dedicated its 2009 World Press Freedom Day initiative to "Journalists in the Firing Line". WAN, the global journalists_in_the_firing_line.jpgorganization for the world's press, is offering a package of materials for publication on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day, to bring attention to the plight of journalists who are persecuted merely for doing their jobs.

The materials, which newspapers are encouraged to publish on 3 May, can be found at http://www.worldpressfreedomday.org.
