US: Journalism students provide content for South Florida newspapers

The Sun Sentinel, Miami Herald and Palm Beach Post have announced a partnership with Florida International University's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The deal will allow students enrolled in journalism courses at FIU to work as reporters, photographers and videographers, providing content for the three papers' print and online editions as part of the South Florida News Service.  The service will launch in early January.
In a joint statement, Palm Beach Post editor John Bartosek and Miami Herald editor Anders Gyllenhaal said they are "delighted and very excited about this venture, which will serve both the university and our newspapers with a new approach to covering the community -- in stories, in video, in audio, in both English and Spanish."

They added, "at a time when the news business is evolving every day, we can think of no better partners than the college students who will shape the media of the future."

In August the three papers entered into an online content sharing deal.

Get with it, guys. Journalism students in New Zealand have been providing news stories to media outlets since about 1975. The relationship between J schools here and media outlets has been the fundamental reason why our journalism training has been so successful for such a long time.
