Gates Foundation donates millions for global health media coverage

The cost of covering global health issues is expensive which means that news organizations have been cutting back on their reporting.  In order to ensure coverage of their work in the health industry, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has offered a grant of $3.5 million to The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

According to Patti Parson the managing producer of NewsHour, the grant came with "no strings attached."  She stated that if her correspondents had critical coverage on a certain story and Gates objected, "we'd let him defend it, of course, but we'd proceed with the story."

The Gates Foundation has financed health journalism in the past through various news organizations and universities.
