US: AP sets new style rule for heads of state

The Associated Press will now include full names on first reference of heads of state, according to a press release.
For example, President Bush will be referred to as President George W. Bush on first reference. The change was made to "provide consistency between US stories and those from AP overseas," said Darrell Christian, a co-editor of the AP Stylebook.
"We need to standardize how we refer to the president, especially since the wire now services more of a global audience," Christian said.
