Wikileaks announces auction for documents
Posted by Alisa Zykova on August 28, 2008 at 9:36 AM
Wikileaks, a document-leaking site, announces that it is in possession of "thousands" of e-mails and attachments from 2005-2008 that belong to a prominent adviser to Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, reports European Journalism Centre (EJC).
However, the data isn't available online and Wikileaks decided to auction it off to the highest bidder. The site started soliciting bids from media outlets for the documents that are to provide information on Chavez's administration, CIA activities in Venezuela and the Chavez-lead Bolivarian revolution.
Although Wikileaks will eventually publish the material, the winner would have exclusivity and restricted access to it.
The move may be in opposition to the sites initial aim of hiring "netizens" to provide public analysis of secret corporate and state documents, writes EJC.
Meanwhile, Wikileaks says that the money earned from the bid would go towards its source protection fund.
