British freelance journalists were told that they would be fined as much as £5,000 (€6,355) if they do not register as a "data controller" with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), reported the European Journalism Centre.
The ICO is insisting that freelancers register since the personal data that they gather is secured by the Data Protection Act, which dictates that electronically processed information, such as contact details, is to be handed over to a given person if he or she asks for it.
