US: Wisconsin daily goes online, dropping print editions to 2 days/week

The 5,500-daily circulation Daily Telegram in Superior, Wisconsin has announced it will be dropping its daily print publication in favor of a web-based product, to be accompanied by print editions two days per week.

The announcement comes just three months after another Wisconsin daily,The Capital Times in Madison, moved online.

"We see a lot of our readers migrating to the Web, we see that growing every month," said Ken Browall, publisher. "Economics is another piece of it. We have seen declining revenue, we are not immune to it."

The Daily Telegram has yet to decide which days the print paper will be available.

"We will talk to readers and advertisers about what are the best two days," he said. "We will look at what will work most, and when, when meetings are held and other news events."

The Daily Telegram, in jumping on to the online bandwagon, is able to avoid another newsroom trend - layoffs. Browall said no cutbacks in staff are expected.
