US: Triblocal continues to grow

The Chicago Tribune has expanded Triblocal, its hyperlocal community websites, to 13 southwest and western communities in the Chicago suburbs.

Triblocal now counts 21 sites.

"Since our initial launch, we have seen a significant increase in community participation on the Web and in print," said Kyle Leonard, Triblocal editor. "In expanding Triblocal, we looked to add suburbs based on affinity between communities derived from schools, shopping and other resources."

Triblocal aims to have 35 community sites, supported by eight newspapers with a circulation of 120,000, by the end of the year. Print editions of Triblocal content are distributed weekly along with copies of the Chicago Tribune.

Many other newspapers have developed their hyperlocal and community coverage, as part of a trend that will be sustained in 2008.
