UK news sites flooded with foreign users

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on January 22, 2008 at 3:46 PM
At least five of UK’s news websites now have more foreign than national visitors. Who do you think has most?

The Daily Mail
, with 69% - 5.1 million users – of users from outside the UK in Nov. 2007.

According to ComScore still, 57% of users of Telegraph.co.uk (3.5 million) are from outside the UK, 56% for Guardian Unlimited (4.6 million), and 55% for Times Online (2.9 million).

International traffic to BBC.com increased by 59% across all sites last year. In November, around 45% of traffic to Sun Online was international and it was a 50% split for the Independent’s site.

UK newspaper sites have succeeded in becoming the most popular voices for the Anglophone audience. But the approaches differ from one site to another, as explained by Ed Roussel, digital editor at Telegraph Media Group.

"First and foremost our website is targeted at Britain and coverage of the UK is our priority," he said.

"But that is closely followed by the US in the breakdown of our traffic, and then everyone in the English-speaking world.

"One of the challenges is that while we get a significant amount of US traffic, many of those visitors want a British perspective, and that's where we differ in approach to the Guardian.

"We're not going to go to the US and write for a US audience, because we think the strength is in our UK perspective."

Personally, I subscribe to three British RSS news feeds (BBC News, Guardian Unlimited, and the Telegraph), and I check them daily. It's nice to get another perspective on the news -- one different from the American media's. Plus they often include stories that are not reported or are considered "trivial" by the US news outlets. And finally -- while the British press have their share of "infotainment" stories, for the most part they cover REAL news stories, not just the latest on Britney/Lindsay/etc.
