How to record, edit and incorporate audio files to fit your online journalistic needs

Posted by Barbara Nguyen on January 28, 2008 at 11:20 AM
Mindy McAdams of the University of Florida teaches a “No-Fear Guide to Multimedia Skills” as part of the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute’s two-part, eight-hour hands-on training session for journalists, mostly newspaper reporters. A helpful webpage neatly summarizes the skills and tools necessary to publish audio and audio slideshow content on news websites.

McAdams conveniently lists some handy guides used during the workshops. Links for each guide are provided on her website, listed at the bottom of the page.

“*  Super-Fast Guide to Audio Editing
Includes instructions for how to download and install Audacity, a free audio-editing program that works on     Windows and Mac.

* Editing Audio with Audacity, Part 2
Skills for your later audio projects -- including multitrack editing; fade-in and fade-out; noise reduction.         This is more advanced than what we covered in the workshop session, but you can easily add these skills     to your repertoire later.

* Audio resources page
Here are links to all kinds of tutorials and guides to interviewing for audio (and radio) presentation, how to     edit, tips, best practices, etc.

* Tutorial: An MP3 audio player for any Web page
Play audio directly on the page, whether it's on your blog or on your newspaper's Web site. The player is     free. All you have to do is copy and paste, and upload your MP3 file.”

An “Inspiration” section as well as sections on soundslides and where to find affordable audio equipment round out McAdams helpful guide. Please note that McAdams generously provides links for nearly every resource mentioned, including her own blog and e-mail for further inquiries.
