US: New York Times allows moderated comments on articles
General manager Vivian Schiller and deputy managing editor Jonathan Landman describe this new allowance for commentary on articles as “more discriminating than the blog-comment platform” and say “it gives readers more control.”
A few key features have proved helpful to readers. Readers are able to recommend comments and view them in order based on number of recommendations. Editors can also choose important selections for readers with little time to browse all comments.
As of now, comments are only being put on a few articles due to the building of certain tools that will be used for automated moderation. There are still some key features that are not being used just yet. Schiller and Landman report that they are “excited about the chance to experiment.”
