US: 1 Million Subscribers to WSJ.com
Online subscriptions grew 25.5% in the third quarter partially due to an offer for new subscribers to receive both print and online editions, reported the Dow Jones in October. This news came at the same time as News Corporations chief Rupert Murdoch was thinking of changing WSJ online from paid subscription to free access supported by advertising.
Circulation for print and electronic editions of WSJ combined dropped 1.5% to 2.01 million for the six months that ended with September 30th compared to the same period last year. Print circulation is at 1.66 million down 2.9% from the same period last year. Online subscriptions, however, are on the rise. Dow Jones cites this as proof that charging for access to news online can still be a success.

It seems that news providers should aggregate their information on a common search engine and allow subscribers to find information by defining specific searches.
