UK: Associated pays Blairs for its indiscretion

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on November 23, 2007 at 12:32 PM
Tony Blair and his wife have won substantial damages for infringement of privacy by Associated Newspapers, after flagship paper the Daily Mail published pictures of the couple on holiday.

“They have always accepted a certain level of media scrutiny, particularly whilst Tony Blair was prime minister, but ultimately they and their family have the right to a private life," said Graham Atkins, whose firm represented the Blairs.

"In this matter, the photographers over-stepped the mark and this must be a good result for those in the public eye generally."

Perhaps this settlement marks a change of perspective for the British press, which has traditionally been ruthless in its picture-taking and tracking of celebrities.

Yet some pictures are still available on the Mail’s website, showing Cherie Blair sunbathing on a pleasure boat during a holiday in August 2006.

Part of the damages won by the Blairs have already been donated to charities.
