Tips about newspaper blogs, sports helps

The Houston Chronicle’s John McClain, like a number of other sports beat newswriters, carries out much of his coverage through a blog for the paper. Here’s what makes the difference though: a full-on approach to multimedia content, and a reader-friendly approach to blogging.
Although traditionally a print guy, McClain regularly produces text, audio and video content for his blog.
When asked whether he’s a newspaper columnist or a blogger, McClain accurately answers that he simply does a little of everything. The point is that the form doesn’t affect the essence, which is journalistic coverage.
McClain also gives some tips as to how journalist bloggers can engage readers.
“Treat readers with respect. Ask them questions that make them think. Get them involved in your blog. I run contests and taken readers to lunch so I can meet them. I've done this three times, the last time for 15 of them, and will be doing it many more times. Write what they want to read.”
He also claims sports is an easier beat to blog about, since “everyone's an expert on sports,” which helps to further engage the audience.
On the other hand, “some of the readers irritate the hell out of me, but when you let them know it, they've got you. You have to have thick skin if you're going to blog and let readers say just about anything they want,” says McClain.
McClain is yet another living proof that a print background doesn’t bar – to the contrary – a writer from creating solid multimedia journalism pieces.
“His print roots run deep, with a strong commitment to connecting with and serving his readers... a commitment that's led him beyond print and into multimedia publishing,” wrote the Online Journalism Review.
