A media rights group Free Media Movement, in Colombo has asked the Sri Lankan government to help find a Sri Lankan Tamil journalist based in embattled Jaffna who was "abducted by an unidentified group," according to FMM, believed to be paramilitary forces.
"Uthayan management believes that he may be kept in one of the paramilitary group offices in Jaffna and immediate action by the government may save his life," the group said in a statement.
Anusha Pelpita, director of government in Sri Lanka's information department has said that the situation is being investigated.
Uthayan’s pro-Tamil editorials have come under strong pressure from security forces and pro-government paramilitary groups.
The newspaper has been attacked several times over the last few years, leaving three staff members dead and the editor living on the premises of the newspaper because he fears going outside.
Sri Lanka is pressing for a military victory over the Tamil Tigers and since 1972 the conflict has left tens of thousands of people dead. Sri Lanka has been pronounced by media rights activists as the most dangerous place in the world for journalists to work.
