Murdoch admits editorial control over The Sun, News of the World

Murdoch has admitted that he has editorial control over The Sun and News of the World regarding who the paper backs in general elections or what line they take on European issues.
This information was revealed in a September 17th meeting in New York, during the committee's inquiry into media ownership. The minute from the meeting stated: "For The Sun and News of the World he explained that he is a 'traditional proprietor'. He exercises editorial control on major issues – like which party to back in a general election or policy on Europe."

Murdoch, however, said that he did take a different approach with The Times and The Sunday Times. He said he often asked about the papers and what they were doing, but did not directly instruct them what to do or interfere.

Recently, journalists at the Wall Street Journal staged absences to protest their takeover by News Corp. because they felt as though editorial independence would be in danger.
