Korea: OhmyNews! CitJ has a school
On Nov. 24, OhmyNews, reportedly the world’s largest citizen journalism website, inaugurated a new school – funded by and designed for citizen journalism. Not only did the school benefit from $400,000 in funding, its programs seem far from amateurish.
The school is located an hour and half drive away from Seoul, in a rural area. The deserted elementary school, after a $400,000 upgrade, is ready to become the OhmyNews Citizen Journalism School, a community education center meant to teach citizen jounalism.
The program will include introductory courses for citizen journalists, writing workshops and digital camera courses for photojournalists and videojournalists.
Advanced classes will include some of the classic courses of typical journalism schools, including “How to improve interview skills,” a ‘re-education’ program for professional journalists, workshops for online journalism and intensive journalism prep-school for applicants who want to work in professional news organizations.
There will also be classes for media execs and managers who want to start a new media venture.
Faculty will be composed of professional journalists from all media (print, radio and television), as well as senior OhmyNews citizen reporters.
Facilities include three classrooms that can accommodate 100 students simultaneously, as well as in-school lodging and dining facilities for up to 50 guests. Broadband Internet access and Wi-Fi are available.
If you have any feedback about this, or more information about the school, please share your views with us.
