European Court rules in favor of source protection

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has ruled that a Dutch court should not have detained Dutch journalist Koen Voskuil in 2000, after he refused to reveal a source. A step towards the protection of journalists and their sources in Europe.
Voskuil was detained for 18 days, for refusing to reveal the identity of a source who told him that the police had used a pretext to raid the home of a suspect.
The European Court ruled that the detention was a violation of freedom of speech and his right to freedom and safety.
However, the Court rejected Voskuil’s demand for compensation.
