Economist’s failed innovative project may lead to online only venture

The Economist’s ten-month web R&D project to “create an innovative and web-based product, service, or business model by July 2007” ended without success and didn’t bring any output to the market. However, the publisher is now taking what is left from that project to possibly create an online-only publishing venture.
The publisher’s chief information officer Mike Seery published a post-mortem report on the failed project, called Project Red Stripe in order to share the lessons they learned from the project with other editorial innovators.
Some of the failings reported by Seery were as follows:
“Some members of the team found the process of taking a step back from reality really hard.” And in regards to business models: “Some of us thought that monetising the service would be pretty straightforward and non-contentious - most of us, though, thought that it was more likely that it would be run as a not-for-profit or even a charity.”
