Will the Telegraph merge its daily and Sunday titles?

Although it has been denied by the Telegraph Media Group, it has been speculated that the group's Sunday paper staff could join the daily staff, effectively making the titles one. The latest resignation from the daily rekindled the rumors.

Sunday editor Patience Wheatcroft resigned in September, citing pressure to integrate the two titles. Now, the daily's newsdesk forward planner, Anil Dawar, has resigned because of requests from the Sunday title's new editor, Ian MacGregor, and news editor, Tim Woodward, for Dawar to do more for their side of the operation. Dawar simply did not want to add to his already busy schedule for no extra compensation.

The Guardian points to some signs of a potential integration of the two Telegraph titles: the photo desks have merged, the business editors for the paper are the same person, journalists for the daily have been seen in the Sunday title and the management is talking about "increased synergy".

But what does the "increased synergy" mean. The Telegraph is often cited as the best example of an integrated newsroom. It is well known that this integration has led several significant staff changes and that the threat of a strike loomed over the original move to its new, open-floor plan headquarters. No doubt the Telegraph's operations are incredibly impressive. But it is not clear how the integration is affecting the majority of the paper's staff. Are more Telegraph journalists such as Dawar being asked to do more work? If so, is this sustainable? Does the integrated newsroom of the future mean less journalists working more time? What do you think?
