UK: Daily Mirror to revamp site, rethink print prioritization

The Daily Mirror will be revamping its website early 2008, for the second time in a year. The site will emphasize comments and user-led content. Editor Richard Wallace also criticized newspaper giveaways and described the editorial evolution of the print product.

"It is not just going to be the Daily Mirror newspaper on your computer. It is pointless trying to compete with the BBC and CNN [on breaking news],” said Wallace about the relaunch.

He mentioned the site would have "more services with a consumer element that can complement what we do in the paper".

Wallace also blamed the numerous newspaper giveaways, which tend in his opinion to further devalue newspapers. “We are telling the audience our product is so useless we are giving you a film or CD with it," he said.

His most interesting comment concerned the editorial changes that will happen in the print paper, faced with the continuous news cycles of broadcast TV and online.

"News is everywhere all the time, and it is very difficult not to know what is going on in the world ... If a cabinet minister resigns right now people will be sick to death of [the story] by the next morning. Will we have it in the paper? Yes. Will it be on the front page? Probably not," Wallace added.

He also said newspapers still lead the news agenda, “but when there is not a major news story then we struggle, frankly.”

On our ResourceShelf.com site we've been tracking cameraphone searching since a 2003 report about this type of searching from Amazon.com.

In this post:

we offer a link to a research report from Microsoft about cameraphone searching, intros to Semapedia (cameraphone + Wikipedia) and Mobot (just point your camera). We also offer a look at several content-based image retrieval services, many providing free demos.
