UAE: Editors sign Charter of Honour and Code of Ethics

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on October 4, 2007 at 10:11 AM
Editors of leading Arabic and English newspapers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed the Charter of Honour and Code of Ethics, which outlines a broad range of ethical requirements for journalism.

The document defines rules and ethics of journalism covering a range of issues, from the public’s right to information to the press’ obligation to present information accurately. The document also promotes professional relationships between journalists and their sources, deals with issues of biased journalism, ethics rules relating to crimes and stories about children, and highlights the fact that the media shouldn’t abuse human rights under any pretext.

“While performing their duties, journalists should keep in mind the principles of freedom and integrity in gathering and publishing stories and also voicing fair and neutral comments and criticisms,” said Mohammed Yusouf, Chairman of the UAE Journalists’ Association.

“Besides, they should use only legitimate means to obtain information, photographs and documents from genuine sources,” he cautioned.

"This was a response from us to clarify to the public that as journalists, we have duties and obligations too, and cannot cross the boundaries of journalism," said Sami Al Riyami, Editor-in-Chief of the Arabic language Emarat Al Youm.
