South Korea: more turmoil over centralized briefing rooms
"We have given enough time to vacate the current press rooms, which have been allocated for other uses," an official at the Government Information Agency said.
The government plans to have the journalists moved out of the offices by the end of the working week.
The South Korean government allegedly wants to open up to media coverage by opening new briefing rooms and setting up online broadcasts of its news conferences.
But journalists have repeatedly complained that the new plans will only contribute to oppress the media.
Under the previous organization, “most South Korean ministries had separate press rooms where domestic media stationed reporters throughout the day and who form informal but exclusive press clubs,” reported Reuters.
The escalation of the conflict now serves as a political argument, as the opposition has vowed to return to the old briefing rooms if they take power.
