Delegates of the Trinity Mirror Regionals Editorial Leaders Program will go through three week-long courses over a year, as well as participate in studies online.

13 editorial heads of TMR have enrolled in the program, which replaces the publisher’s former in-house program, Today’s Editor.

“We have always paid a great deal of attention to staff development, and Today's Editor has been a very effective way of developing our top talent,” said TMR editorial director Neil Benson.

“However, with the industry undergoing such radical change, we felt it was time to look for a new type of programme that will equip our next generation of newsroom leaders with all the key managerial skills, allied to a strongly enhanced understanding of journalism in the multimedia context.”

TOL is offering another course, to run from Jan 6. through 14 in Prague. Led by journalists and foreign correspondents, instructors include Rob Cameron, the BBC's correspondent in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, David Rennie, The Economist's European Union correspondent, and Michael Jordan, the Bratislava-based correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor.

The TOL Foreign Correspondent course will cover a wide range of topics, including how to adapt to a foreign country, when and why bypass official sources of information, how to find the exclusive story, and more. More information here.

As more and more newspapers seek to train their staff and adapt to the multimedia age, one of the main questions will be whether to carry training in-house or through specialized programs.
