US: Baltimore Sun launches website redesign
On July 17, The Baltimore Sun launched a redesigned website featuring a cleaner look and allowing users to submit online videos.
According to spokeswoman Anne C. Burger, the new baltimoresun.com has a brighter and less-cluttered look, which includes muted tones and sans-serif fonts. The section fronts will complement text with video and large photos.
Following the rise of online video, the newly designed site will provide space for users to upload their own videos, which could be “anything from breaking news, a child’s lacrosse game, to their cat playing with yard.” It appears that the Baltimore Sun hopes to catch the hyperlocal wave by soliciting such submissions from its readers.
Thus far in 2007, baltimoresun.com averages 2.3 million unique users and ranks 19th on the list of most popular newspaper websites. This redesign is the first major site overhaul since 2005, when the address changed from Sunspot.net to the current URL.
