To survive online, try calendars, video, and stringers

Robin Miller, Editor in Chief for Open Source Technology Group, suggests that newspapers looking to increase their online presence should add calendars, online video, and blogs to their web sites.
- Miller encourages newspapers to create comprehensive, organized calendars of local events to develop a loyal readership base. Instead of haphazardly posting events, newspapers should make the calendars organized and searchable by a variety of queries. Web-building tools would make such a database relatively easy to create and maintain.
- Rather than imitating formulaic televised news broadcasts, newspapers should develop their own style of online video reporting. Reporters should learn to create longer, engaging pieces of journalism, building off their print experience but integrating a wealth of new multimedia technology. Miller suggests hiring at least one experienced TV documentary director to lead the video news efforts.
- Instead of relying on unstable volunteer efforts, newspapers should pay successful, local bloggers to enhance content with their substantial reporting. The industry cannot compete with the rise of citizen journalism, Miller predicts, but it can combine the experience of news professionals with the fresh, varied coverage that a team of local bloggers provides.
- Miller insists that newspaper staffs must understand the difference between online and print advertising and the advantages of each. Rather than looking to online advertising to simply replace the slowing revenues from print, newspapers should try to integrate the advantages of the online media with strategies such as search-based ads, premium listings, and even coupon distribution.
According to Miller, newspapers following this model can expect to run their websites at profit within a year or two. Nevertheless, he cautions that to stay on top of the game, newspapers must remain diligent and innovative to remain the most recognizable news brands in both print and online.
