France: dailies unite to uphold editorial independence

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on July 3, 2007 at 2:06 PM
Four major French dailies (Libération, Le Monde, L’Humanité and La Croix) offered free ad space on July 2 for ads that promoted editorial independence. The operation was led as luxury group LVMH seeks to buy out business daily Les Echos.

The Society of journalists of Les Echos prompted this initiative, to make “public opinion (aware) of the issue of media’s independence.”

The Society of journalists is worried that the paper risks losing its editorial independence and credibility if it is acquired by LVMH.

To prove its point, the Society asked CEOs of major French companies if they would continue to read Les Echos were it owned by a direct competitor.

Les Echos’ staffers’ outcry draws some parallels with Down Jones’ journalists concerned about News Corp.’s bid. But it’s a good thing to see, in Les Echo’s case, that other major dailies are cooperating to voice these worries.

Is this about the New Yorker or New York magazine?

New York magazine. It's not the best example for newspapers, but it does give an idea what they could do with not that much effort.
