Professor Ric Jensen gives insight into his online journalism course and the journalists of tomorrow
Ph.D. and adjunct professor, Ric Jensen, recently taught an online journalism class for the Mass Communication Department at Sam Houston State University. Jensen’s primary goal was to “give students a broad understanding of how they will have to develop new skills and new ways of thinking to succeed in online journalism.”
Some of the topics covered by Jensen included:
- Trends facing the news industry,
- The rise of citizen journalism,
- The advantages offered by online journalism (i.e., being able to supplement plain text with audio and video and presenting news stories in greater detail),
- Whether journalists are the sole arbiters of what is newsworthy or whether the public should be involved in defining and shaping news stories,
- The ability to be proficient in multiple media,
- The need to be able to continuously update news stories,
- The need to work on shorter deadlines,
- The ability to carefully select and use links to other sources of information,
- Whether the act of creating blogs makes one a journalist,
- Differences between blogging and journalism.
After teaching the course Jensen has the following observations to offer:
“- It’s best if the instructor has at least a working knowledge of how to walk the students through the basics of using the latest Internet-based technologies.
“- Take advantage of the rapidly-changing and dynamic nature of the online journalism field and use it to your advantage when teaching.
“- Don’t presume that the students are going to be comfortable with or adept at new Internet-based technologies simply because they are young.
“- If your students have focused on a print journalism track and have not taken many courses in broadcast journalism, don’t assume that they will take the initiative to capture, edit, and place on the Web-original audio and video they produced.
“- Keep on reminding the students that the essence of the course is to practice excellent journalism.”
It will be interesting to see how the popularity of these types of courses expands as more and more newspaper companies invest in their online presence.
It is also worth keeping track of courses such as these and professors such as Jensen as they educate and prepare the journalists of tomorrow.

So, what? Firstly, we never asked for an apology in the form of ridicule of Jews on this level and secondly, there is no basis for equivocating between the Holocaust and libels against the Holy Prophet of Islamunless of course Zionists wish to finally admit that the Holocaust is their real prophet?
Mohammed rasulallah was a Prophet of God, the Holocaust is merely a historical event. I am aware that some Iranian news papers have stooped to this level, but, as Muslims, it isn't revenge through this sort of gratification (gratification by the humiliation of our enemies) but is in fact a cease and desist of the graphic humiliation of a Prophet of God. We object to this practice with respect to all the Prophet of the Torah and the Gospels, but Mohammed (p.b.u.h) was the final, and greatest, Prophet, there will never be another.
Don't presume for a moment that all we seek is the humiliation of the Jews through graphic lampoons of their national tragedies, what we demand is an end to the humiliation of our Prophet.
The messenger of GOD is not humiliated if people like you who worship him do not let him, it seems in your eyes he is. Get a grip!
Bravo to the Cartoonist.
My father escaped the tyranny of Russia in 1912, and refused to go back. He sponsered his brother
out of a POW camp in Ontario in 1919, who also refused to go back.
My wife had two uncles of German descent fighting the Nazis in Germany.
One of my uncles spent four years in a POW camp in Germany.
Now some person, with less than the inteligence that our maker gave to cabbage is telling me I can't look at what I want to see and can't read what I want to read.
It would seem that if our Canadian editors don't have the backbone to print cartoons, then I will have to rely on the Danish press.
Thank you very much for freedom of press
THE MESSAGE OF PROPHET Muhammad (SAWS) IS
PEACE N FAITH. BUT SOME OF THE EUROPEANS
HAVE MADE FUN OF HIM BY DRAWING HIS PICTURES
WHICH IS VERY SHAMEFUL.IS THIS THE CIVILIZED ATTITUDE ? NO ONE HAS ANY RIGHT TO MAKE FUN OF OTHERS HOLY PERSONALITIES. SO EVERY PERSON SHOULD CONDEMN THIS.EVEN MOST OF THE PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE THAT MUSLIMS HAVE BELIEF IN THE TEACHINGS OF CHRIST
(AN INNOCENT PROPHET) N THIS IS THE PART OF OUR RELIGION GIVEN TO US BY OUR PROHET MUHAMMAD(SAWS) THAT HAZRAT ESSA(CHRIST) IS ALSO OUR PROPHET N OUR FAITH IS INCOMPLETE WITHOUT A BELIEF IN CHRIST.GOD SEND PROPHET MUHAMMAD(SAWS) AFTER CHRIST TO MAKE WORLD PEACEFUL N PROSPER.BOTH THE PROPHETS CAME WITH SAME TEACHINGS N BOTH ARE MESSANGERS OF SAME ALMIGHTY GOD BUT ALAS! PEOPLE R IGNORANT OF THIS N JUST MAKING FUN.
HOW CAN THE NON MUSLIMS SAY THAT MUSLIMS ARE TERRORISTS WHILE ON THE OTHER HAND REALITY IS:
The root word of Islam is 'silm', which means peace. So the spirit of Islam is the spirit of peace. The first verse of the Qur'an breathes the spirit of peace. It reads: In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
This verses repeated in the Qur'an no less than 114 times. It shows the great importance Islam attaches to such values as Mercy and Compassion. One of God's names, according to the Qur'an, is as-salam, which means peace. Moreover the Qur'an states that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent to the world as a mercy to mankind
The Qur'an presents the universe as a model which is characterized by harmony and peace (36:40). When God created heaven and earth, He so ordered things that each part might perform its function peacefully without clashing with any other part. The Qur'an tells us that "the sun is not allowed to overtake the moon, nor does the nigh outpace the day. Each in its own orbit runs." (36:40) For billions of years, therefore, the entire universe has been fulfilling its function in total harmony with His divine plan
According to Islam, peace is not simply an absence of war. Peace opens doors to all kind of opportunities which are present in any given situation. It is only in a peaceful situation that planned activities are possible. It is for this reason that the Qu'an says 'reconciliation is the best' (4:128). Similarly the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has observed: "God grants to gentleness (rifq) what He does not grant to violence (unf). (sunan Abu Dawud 4/255

According to Islam, peace is the rule and war is only an exception. Even in defensive war we have to see the result. If the result is doubtful, Muslims should avoid war, even in a defensive situation. Stray acts of aggression are not enough for Muslims to rush into war. They have to assess the whole situation and adopt a policy of avoidance wh
In actual fact, the mission of all the Prophets right from Adam to Jesus was one and the same - of establishing the ideology of monotheism in the world, so that man might worship one God alone. As we know, there came a large number of Prophets in ancient times but the message of monotheism remained at the initial stage; it could not culminate in revolution
The reason being that in ancient times, the system of monarchy was entrenched throughout the world. The kings, in order to secure their political interests, adopted the course of religious persecution. These kings suppressed all religious movements, which were different from the state religion. They would nip all apostasy in the bud, since they saw religion as a matter of affirming one's loyalty to the state. If a person adhered to a
religion other than the state religion, he was regarded as a rebel
That is why in ancient times prophetic movements could go no further ahead than the state of da'wah. No sooner would a movement based on monotheism arise than the coercive political system would be activated to pull it out by its roots. The reason for the absence of any historical record of Prophets (besides the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in antiquity is traceable to the intense opposition of these coercive political systems
sultans_17: ivan my boy what happen
All the Prophets of ancient times, historically speaking, were like mythical beings, rather than real human beings accepted as historical figures. The Prophet Jesus was the last link in the chain of these persecutions faced by the preachers of monotheism. Then God decreed the abolition of this coercive political system, even if it entailed the use of force in order that the age of religious persecution might be brought to an end forever, and replaced by the age of religious freedom. This divine plan was brought to completion through the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions. This is the command given in the Qur'an: "Fight them until there be no persecution and religion be wholly Allah's." (8:39)
Therefore the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received special divine succor in the form of a powerful team consisting of one hundred thousand individuals. Equipped with this team the Prophet waged war to end this coercive system of religious persecution, and it was in Arabia that it was first of all overthrown. Then within a very short span of time, they advanced to abolish the coercive system established by the Sassanid and Byzantine empires
In the wake of this Islamic action, the coercive system was abolished forever in the major part of the inhabited world of the time. This war waged by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions was not a war as is commonly understood, but rather a divine operation, which was carried out by people who possessed a high standard of moral character
However, this operation was certainly only temporary in nature. Its goal was to put an end to the age of religious persecution and usher in the age of religious freedom. This end was fully achieved during the early period of Islam, the age of the pious Caliphs. Afterwards the time came to keep the sword in its sheath and engage in da'wah work, that is, the call to God, which was the real and permanent goal of Islam
It is no exaggeration to say that Islam and violence are contradictory to each other. The concept of Islamic violence is so obviously unfounded that, prima facie it stands rejected. The fact that violence is not sustainable in the present world is enough to convince one that violence as a principle is quite alien to the scheme of things in Islam. Islam claims to be an eternal religion and such a religion cannot afford a principle in its scheme which will not be sustainable in later periods of human history. And attempt to bracket violence with Islam amounts to casting doubts upon the very eternity of the Islamic religion
No wonder, then that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) so earnestly used to entreat his Lord in his daily prayer: "O God, you are the original source of Peace; from You is all Peace, and to You returns all Peace. So, make us live with Peace; and let us enter paradise: the House of Peace. Blessed be You, our Lord, to whom belongs all Majesty and Honor!"
Every time speculation arises that a terrorist attack has happened, Non-Muslims and Muslims alike suspect the Islamic connection. Of course the disclaimers abound, but a lingering suspicion about Muslims is left in the general views of terrorism, even if other groups are identified as the main culprits for any particular incident
This perception is not due to any intrinsic resentment of Islam by people all over the world including America. In the US, it is understood that the mainstream of Muslims, the vast majority of them, like in every other faith, is peaceful and pay their taxes, trying to make America a better society, trying to improve relations with neighbors and colleagues
But images and terminology influence public opinion, and a bitter taste is left when Islam is reported in the daily headlines. The term "Islamic fundamentalism", whatever it means, has been repeated enough times in relation to violent incidents that naturally, any thinking human being has to be uncomfortable with the fact that America is home to a vibrant Muslim community. The problem stems from negative images about Islam. In the court of public opinion, Islam is guilty until proven innocent
Even though the Middle East was home to fewer terrorist incidents than Latin America and Europe, for example, it is still regarded as the region where terrorism is rooted. According to a recent US State Department report, Patterns of Global Terrorism, issued earlier this year, 272 terrorist events occurred in Europe, 92 in Latin America, 45 in the Middle East, 62 anti-US attacks occurred in Latin America last year, 21 in Europe, 6 in the Middle East.
These numbers represent the terrorist trend and not an anomaly, whereby the majority of perpetrators are not linked to the Middle East or Islam. The Red Army Faction in Germany, the Basque Separatists in Spain, the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, the Shining Path in Peru and the National Liberation Army in Columbia are not viewed with the same horror as terrorist groups of Muslim background
There is no moral justification for terrorism regardless of the ethnic or religious background of the perpetrator or the victim, but the factual basis of terrorism has been either hidden or twisted in the public's perception of this policy problem, especially in congressional hearings on terrorism
The countries with the worst terrorist records in the world are not in the Middle East either. They are not even Muslim countries outside the Middle East. They are Columbia and Germany, havens for drug lords and neo-Nazis
The negative association of Islam with terrorism exists, but no one has ever asked "Why?". Could it be that American society cannot overcome the Khomeini phobia, even though he is dead? The US Congress found it necessary to push 20 million dollars towards covert operations in toppling the Iranian government even at the dissent of people in the CIA
Some Muslim and Arab countries, both friend and foe, are run by tyrants who kill more of their own people than those outside their countries. The presumption that these countries represent a threat to American interests or that any one of them can dominate the region or even rival the only remaining superpower is indeed generous. So the issue is not these countries' hegemony in their region or the world, but about who can dominate their people and exploit their resources
sayma_sana left the room
The perception in the Middle East is that US policy does not serve the peoples' interests; it protects Israelis when they violate human rights, while it slaps sanctions on and takes military actions against countries whose dictators misbehave, resulting in suffering, starvation and even slaughter, all in the name of teaching the tyrants a lesson. The priorities in the Middle East for the US are not human rights, but rather oil and Israeli superiority. Consequently, anti-American sentiment increases
The issue is not Chechnya, and it is not even about Islam and the West. Debates about religious wars and cultural clashes only distract us from the real issue: the powerful want to continue dominating the powerless, manipulating facts to influence public opinion, hence maintaining the status quo.
never mind the religion facts
would the same newspapers print child porn cartoons or any cartoons with racism?

Hi Professor,
I am a journalism student in Melbourne, Australia and am currently researching the effect of new media technologies on journalism and the rise of citizen journalism.
I am looking for participants for the study which will be taking place between July and September of this year, the main method will be indpeth interviews with experts, citizen journalists and industry professionals. I am particularly interested in the lagging state of online journalism in Australia in comparison to other industrialised nations.
Please let me know if you would like to participate, we can conduct the interview via email if this is most convenient.
Kind regards,
Emily Braham.
