Octane’s cover sparks ban on its sale

The Pakistani federal government has banned the sale of the June 2007 issue of Octane and initiated a case against the fashion magazine under the Press and Publication Act. The strong reaction by the federal government spawns from the issue’s cover, which features a nude picture depicting a scantily clad Adam and Eve with the caption “Apple, bone of content.”

In a press note on June 18, the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad said that confiscation of all copies of the June 2007 issue. In addition, he announced the registration of a case against the magazine’s management for having published immoral pictures.

Arguing that the photographs and accompanying captions were an insult to the prophet Adam, the press note added that authorities were currently trying to cancel the publication of Octane. It also warned that publications that included material deemed insulting to sacred personalities would be strictly punished.

In addition, a fatwa for the death of the editor and publisher of Octane has been issued by a Muslim cleric.

In response to the reactions, Octane’s management issued an apology in Urdu newspapers, declaring respect for “Islamic ideology, teachings, and traditions” and that its members “seek forgiveness from God, whatever has happened unintentionally.”
