Guardian redesign, closer to blog layout

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on May 11, 2007 at 10:59 AM
The Guardian has redesigned its homepage with a new widescreen layout, and a similar look to its Comment is Free blogging section (or the Guardian’s travel site). This also marks the beginning of an 18-month redesign for Guardian Unlimited.

The top part of the homepage now features breaking news and a large picture of the day, which links to a multimedia section with video interviews.

The general presentation has become more picture-driven, with pictures running through the whole page, for most stories.

“The Guardian design philosophy values function first and aesthetics second, but you will also notice a fresh look, with new typography and a more varied colour palette,” wrote Mark Porter, the Guardian’s creative editor.

Perhaps a good sign for the overall redesign to come, most comments to Porter’s posting were positive, a rather unusual occurrence in the wake of a redesign.

For full details, read Mark Porter’s explanations in the Guardian link.
