France: New memorial to honor journalists

A new memorial entirely dedicated to journalists killed in the line of duty since 1944 opens today in Bayeux, France.

The city erected the memorial, the only one of its kind in Europe, in conjunction with Reporters without Borders. The memorial consists of 23 white stones, on which the names of 1,876 journalists are engraved, dispersed throughout a landscaped garden walkway.

“It’s the only place in the world where my husband’s name is written in stone,” said Michèle Montas, widow of Haitian journalist Jean Dominique, at the launch of the first completed part of the memorial last year.

Bayeux is located in the Normandy region of France.
