Belgium : Google links back to suing papers
After Google lost its lawsuit in February, Google News was forced to remove all headlines and links of news stories that were cached without the owner’s permission (a search for a newspaper’s name would return no results).
While the inclusion of links is a step towards an agreement, it seems the main issue of the argument has yet to be settled, as older content from the newspapers still doesn’t show up on the search engine. The content newspapers wish to charge for remains inaccessible, similarly to The New York Times’ restricted premium content.
Neither party gave details about their negotiations concerning the bigger issues at hand.
"The Belgian French and German-language daily press publishers and Google Inc. intend to use a quiet period in the court dispute to continue their efforts to identify tangible ways to collaborate in the long term," said representatives of Google and Copiepress (the papers’ copyright group) in a joint statement.
