The Huffington Post has struck a deal with Yahoo and Slate (owned by the WaPo), to host two online debates between candidates along the way to the presidential election. US voters will submit questions to the candidates, and the footage will be streamed on all three websites.

Just another sign of the growth in importance and influence of online news sites on the political scene.

The debate could include the participation of preeminent political figures such as Democratic contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as Republican candidates John McCain and Mitt Romney.

"This Presidential campaign is going to happen on the internet more than any other. We have so many candidates announcing on the internet, we have ads on the internet that have more power and reach [than television ads]," sayd Arianna Huffington, co-founder of the Huffington Post.
