US: TimesSelect free for academia

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on March 12, 2007 at 2:38 PM
TimesSelect is offering a unique and attractive deal to academics: the New York Times’ subscription service will be free to any registered students and faculty with an .edu email address.

“We want students to have unfettered access to the full, rich content of The New York Times, especially the varied opinions expressed by the 22 columnists whose voices are heard through TimesSelect,” said general manager Vivian Schiller.

Current student subscribers will receive pro-rated refunds.

In January 2006, TimesSelect had started offering its service at half-price for academics. Though this demographic makes up for a very small proportion of TimesSelect’s subscribers, the NY Times is currently catering to this group.

The Times is also partnering with social networking site MySpace, to propose a “Win a trip” contest alongside Times' writer and blogger Nick Kristof, aimed at college or graduate school students.

TimesSelect counted 627,000 subscribers in January 2007.
