Twitter, new social network tool for online news?

This may not seem directly relevant to newspapers, but Twitter could be the next ‘must-include’ feature for newspapers online. The Wall Street Journal reports the explosive growth of Twitter.com, a social networking website that asks everybody: “what are you doing?”
Through Twitter, users let other users know of each of their moves and interesting – or uninteresting – daily life anecdotes, such as a tomato soup lunch or the day’s annoyances at work.

As newspapers increasingly explore user-generated content and publish their readers’ experiences (New York Times’ video feature ‘How we Met’ or reader blogs), they could end up including Twitter too.

Twitter can also bring its share of excessive postings and annoyingly regular updates – from people on has no interest in hearing from.

Will online news websites want to include this tool, to play into social fads and easily include user-content, or will Twitter be deemed too far removed from news worthiness?
