US: Keller-Baquet share their lessons
Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on February 16, 2007 at 1:55 PM
The Poynter Institute interviewed former Los Angeles Times editor Dean Baquet, while Editor & Publisher published an interview of the executive editor of The New York Times, Bill Keller. Here both interviews are criss-crossed, to get the insights from two industry experts on newspaper business models, priorities within newsrooms, new media strategies, and more.
We provide little or no, apart from their words on different topics relevant to the newspaper industry.
About the LA Times and NY Times local versus national business models:
"The idea that the L.A. Times is going to say to readers, ‘Buy the L.A. Times, we will tell you what's going on with the traffic and the schools and the cops and the local stuff, and if you want to know what's going on in Iraq, go buy The New York Times,’ that doesn't sound like a terribly sound business approach either,” said Keller.
About the NY Times model “I don't think we've given up our local circulation, but we've rebalanced our circulation so that it's more than half of it is national, that's true,” said Keller.
About newsroom management, cutting costs or valuable resources?
“The case that I tried to make, and that Jim O'Shea continues, is that we don't need to cut if we're trying to produce two newspapers -- one online. It's a little odd to cut dramatically when you have a future to invest in that looks different and requires new skill,” said Baquet.
About doing good journalism:
“That's the other lesson. Get out of all the corporate meetings and get into the newsroom. Many editors have gotten caught up in the office spending time on budgets. Newsrooms want to be led. They want to be inspired about the next story. Sometimes you have to say, "Right now let's go cover the mayor. Let's talk about the next story" said Baquet
About Washington and foreign reporting:
“All coverage in Washington should have a gigantic dose of skepticism and toughness. While getting excited about the election campaign, we still have to fully cover the war,” said Baquet.
“Newspapers are in retreat from covering complicated, foreign stories,” said Keller. As opposed to newspapers not doing this right now, “it just seems common sense to me that you can satisfy people's need to know what's going on in their own community and tell them what's going on in Washington and in Baghdad.”
About embracing new media, while keeping a focus on the basis of good journalism:
“Somehow the conversation about the Web has gone askew. Working on emerging media is something we do. I'd say get ready for change, but the bedrock of what we do is finding the news, beating others on the story,” said Baquet.
“I think the gravest danger facing our business is not new technology or changing demographics or hostile administration in Washington or the blogosphere. The gravest danger facing our business is surrender, despair, panic,” said Keller.
About newspapers’ future:
Baquet reiterated his firm confidence and optimism for newspapers’ future, saying “there’s no question that people are hungry for information.”

Florida People United to Serve Humanity, sm
Statewide - Interdenominational - Ministers' Councils, sm
P. O. Box 2007 Maitland, Florida 32751
Letter to City Officials, Re: Community-Police Relations
*****
Florida STATEWIDE - INTERDENOMINATIONAL - MINISTERS’ UNION OF STATEWIDE - INTERDENOMINATIONAL - AND VICINITY
Date: July 18, seventh, 2006
To: Central Florida Mayors Police and Sheriff Officials
Subject: STATEWIDE - INTERDENOMINATIONAL – MINISTERS’ Concerns, Request -s, and Recommendations
We call today, for immediate action to address the unfair treatment of our Statewide - Interdenominational - Citizens of African Descent with actions to show the disparities scheduled for August, 2006.
At that time we call for actions by the City governments in thirty two major counties that re most in need of diversity training; and all: Florida Metropolitan Statistical areas; The : re-evaluation of the Statewide - Interdenominational – Area’s;
City Managers, County Managers,
And Florida Sheriffs, by representatives of the Interdenominational - Police Services Citizens Task Force, sm of; Florida People United to SERVE Humanity, sm, in order to obtain needed revisions to the City Policies, Charters and County Regulations along with
Pertinent State Laws that will guarantee equal and equitable protection to our Citizens that are served by the Statewide - Interdenominational – Members;
Their families and Neighbors. WE serve all Citizens of African, Hispanic, Caribbean - African, And South Americans of African Origin, and Easy Indian Descents, under just and equitable law.
We have constantly pointed out that; The history of the Statewide - Interdenominational – area’s City Government surveys, show; An extremely blatant history of repeated racial discrimination; Racially motivated police brutality;
The use of unnecessary forces;
Including unnecessary shootings, and;
The Unneeded and unwarranted Tasings;
This year, and in previous years; against African American and Black - Citizens, and unfair practices relating to distribution and allocation of services in predominantly African American and Black - neighborhoods.
We have not received any official response from the Departments for records that show that many crimes are committed in our neighborhoods that DO NOT Live in Our Areas of residences, yet we suffer discrimination, and disparate stigmas, by Police officers, and or members of the Council, while not receiving even a courtesy call regarding our repeated calls for action.
We DEMAND that WEED and SEED Type Programs such as those that are funded by the united States Department of Justice, as Proposed by Bro. Tim Adams, Th. D., in the WEED and SEED Program of Eatonville, Florida, in the 1990’s.
During the Next ninety Days; we will present our list of concerns, Request -s, and recommendations in public nonviolent demonstrations in front of City Halls to the Statewide - Interdenominational – Communities, through rallies and press conferences.
As you are aware, our intentions were well announced through news releases to the cities, and the news media.
The Pervious ACTIONS of: Co-Opting Tactics, by POLICE Chiefs and Sheriffs, Officials of these Cities and Counties of contacting African American and Black - people in our various neighborhoods have historically been used to defeat the cause of justice in our community will not undermine our call for action and redress.
No Longer will their merely visiting us and telling us what they want us to do Work!
We are the Employers and these officials need to LISTEN!
We know that it is in the best interest of the cities of Florida in responding to our Statewide - Interdenominational organizations, - to address these issues with a sense of urgency, in cooperation working cooperatively with us, not by LORDING over us, any Longer.
Attached are some of the concerns, Request -s and recommendations that we present today; Our Statewide Community Action Task Force, a subcommittee of the Statewide - Interdenominational - Ministers’ Union may be contacted at 407-816-3636, Bro. T. Adams, Th. D. Chairman.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Community Action Task Force is an ad hoc committee appointed by;
Brother Tim Adams, Th. D., President of the Statewide - Interdenominational - Ministers’ Union, sm of Florida People United to Serve Humanity, sm
Florida People United to Serve Humanity, sm Community Action Task Force (CATF) exists under the authority of the Statewide - Interdenominational - Ministers’ Union, sm , Of the Florida People United to Serve Humanity, sm
Visions we envision a character centered community of high integrity where people are accepted and protected based on the content of their character and not skin color.
Action Mission: Our Action mission, effective immediately is to work to bring about a character centered community of high integrity where people are accepted and protected based on the content of their character and not skin color using New Testament principles and practices.
This is a nonviolent demonstration to bring our concerns before the many Mayors and City Council members, County Commissioners and State Representatives, and the Citizens of Statewide - Interdenominational Area, of Florida.
We chose nonviolence because:
It follows the example of CHRIST.
It seeks to persuade the opponents that they are mistaken.
It seeks to gain the opponent’s understanding and conversion.
It uses direct action methods (demonstrations, etc.) as a means to awaken a sense of moral and ethical conviction in the opponent.
It seeks redemption and reconciliation instead of bitterness and chaos.
It is not for cowards or self seekers; it requires the willingness to suffer without retaliating.
GOD is on the side of truth and justice.
It is based on the Love of GOD operating in the human heart.
It is rooted in an overflowing love which is purely spontaneous, unmotivated, groundless, creative, and not set in motion by any quality or function of its object.
It is sustained by love that is disinterested; loving not for one’s own good, but for the good of another. It does not distinguish between worthy and unworthy people or friends and enemies.
"Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
" Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
CONCERNSThe following concerns represent the results of surveys employed at several of our Churches. These surveys were used to get direct input from the people we serve.
Concerns Regarding Law Enforcement:
Our police don’t care enough about the people in our community.
Racial profiling.
We no longer feel safe to call or seek out the police.
This is especially TRUE, in Orlando, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Miami and Tampa, Florida.
We fear them now. We have feared them for years.
Too many of Our Members think we are not being treated fair as African American and Black - people by Florida Police and Sheriff Agencies.
It is a scary situation for African American and Black - men in Disadvantaged neighborhoods that are served by the Statewide - Interdenominational -. African American Ministers.
We have too many actions by Inexperienced, and poorly trained or screened officers in Disadvantaged neighborhoods that are served by the Statewide - Interdenominational -. Ministers, sm.
There is a lack of caring police presence in the communities of:
Orlando, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Miami and Tampa, Florida;
There have been too many Shootings, by Police and Sheriff Officers, of African American and Black -s in the Disadvantaged NEIGHBORHOODS, areas that are served by the Statewide - Interdenominational – Ministers.
There is Still Rampant Racism that Prevents the Hiring and Promotions of Many, Many African American and Black - police officers, and Sheriffs Deputies.
Police Brutality is on the Rise, due to increased hatred preached by Police Command Officers toward the Poor, the Young, and the African American Descent People of this State of Florida...
As citizens, and as ministers, many of us feel that we, as African American and Black Persons are being hunted down, unfairly and treated disparately by Police agencies and sheriffs department in North Central and South Florida Cities and Counties.
It clearly appears that; FLORIDA POLICE and SHERIFF AGENCIES are Practicing Racial Profiling in neighborhoods of the Statewide - Interdenominational -.African American Ministers Areas.
Then our People are put in jail for longer periods of time that our White Counterparts, and or for life, and very often for a crime that we have NOT committed.
We are afraid for our son’s lives, on the streets of the areas that our Statewide - Interdenominational – ministers serve, because; of FLORIDA LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, that Practice RACISM and RACIAL PROFILING.
All of the FLORIDA Law ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES’ officers are not prejudiced, but too many are, and those Bad Officers make it bad for the rest of FLORIDA LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES.
As citizens of the Statewide - Interdenominational –MINISTERS Group, Of Florida People United To Serve Humanity, sm –;
We are very, very concerned as to how the African-American race is being treated.
We ASK: Where is the justice?
That is just what it has come to (“JUST US”)
Just us Tased unnecessarily, shot by POLICE and SHERIFFS unnecessarily,
Incarcerated at Disparate Rates and for disparate periods of Time by RACIALLY
LAWS, COURTS and Law Enforcement Agencies.
Misters Concerns regarding Crime in the Neighborhoods of Florida
We would like it if the shooting would stop and the drugs everywhere.
There is illegal Drug activity in the community, and are other Areas.
There is Prostitution in the community, as there is in other areas.
Burglaries in the community that POLICE do not properly investigate.
Car theft in the community that goes unsolved by Police.
Abandoned cars on vacant lots and in front of houses.
Trash and debris dumped on vacant lots that are not enforced by Government.
Boarded up houses and abandoned houses serve as a haven for drug users and dealers disproportionately in Poor and Disadvantaged neighborhoods.
My prayer is that Disadvantaged neighborhoods Statewide - Interdenominational - residents be treated as Northwest residents. We need: City busing, Traffic lights, And Better Water Systems. The city dumping ground must be moved from our neighborhood.
We would really like to see more services made available for the homeless to help them have a place to live and teach them how to live in society.
We submit that all sports generated parking should be held in parking facilities during seasonal games instead of the local neighbor hoods that are then plagued with Occupational Force Police Actions.
These Situations can be avoided with proper planning and Cooperation of Government with the Needy Workers of these Make – shift Parking Places
We need a WEED and SEED POLICE and SHERIFF SOLUTION!
BASED upon the United States Department of Justice Model as Proposed by
Brother Tim Adams, Th. D., Minister, in the Eatonville, Florida model.
Concerns regarding Economic Disparity:
African American and Black - contractors and professionals do not get a fair share of cities’ and Counties’ in the entire State of Florida’s contracts.
We need better access to Health Care, for Poor and Disadvantaged;
African American and Black -persons are treated as second - class citizens after waiting in long lines for treatment or care, that is being paid for by other African Americans.
Racial discrimination in the hiring and promotion of African American and Black - people in the Statewide - Interdenominational –areas’ Fire Departments, and Police Departments.
African American and Black - citizens are suffering double digit unemployment in Statewide - Interdenominational -Communities.
With all of the ongoing construction in Statewide - Interdenominational –Cities and Counties;
We know why there are so few African American and Black -s being hired.
African American and Black - people have been shut out of the Many Airport development opportunities, since the departure of Affirmative Action Programs, and we losing more opportunities daily.
Gentrification in Florida Inner Cities and Counties Statewide – in our Interdenominational -. African American and Black -Neighborhoods are being displaced in the States’ Cities and Counties Statewide - Interdenominational - community.
African American and Black - people have no voice in the governance of the cities contracts.
Many White Business people choose African American and Black -s who only need their validation for Contracts and then routinely assign them the role of leaders in the African American and Black – community, when their interests actually collide with the interests of the Majority of the residents of the African American communities.
African American and Black - and minority students are trailing behind White students in academic performance in Culturally Disparate Statewide Faulty testing, in areas served by our - Interdenominational –Groups.
These Actins occur due to Faulty Rules of Conduct in our educational systems and Policies that penalize the most Vulnerable members of our Society.
Community REQUESTS LIST
We Urgently Request - an immediate end to Florida Agencies’ use of unnecessary force and racial profiling.
We Urgently Request - equal protection under the constitution.
We Urgently Request - that;
The Florida Human Relations Commission,
The United States Justice Department, Community Relations Services, as well as the
United States Civil Rights Commission, conduct complete, and very thorough, investigations into the disproportional use of employees of African American and Black – Police Personnel;
We urge action to curtail the Disparate number of Deaths that occur at the hands of FLORIDA Law Enforcement AGENCIES ; POLICE and FIRE Agencies that do not respect all Human Life Equally; and we demand that this review be citizen controlled, and not just another slanted Police – Controlled review.
We Urgently Request - the establishment of a
Florida Citizen Police Oversight Commission, sm, that reports directly to the Mayors, Councils, County and state of Florida Elected officials and a Council of Citizens from the Affected Neighborhoods, where these atrocities are occurring.
The commission should have investigatory authority, subpoena authority and discipline authority, granted by Florida Legislative Actions.
We Urgently Request - drug free and crime free neighborhoods, with input by All of the Citizens who reside in the neighborhoods participating, with elected officials Meeting with us, and listening to our concerns.
We Urgently Request - the elimination of racial discrimination at every level of Government and Private industry that looks to Cities and Counties for Funding of any TYPE, KIND, or Source.
Make it illegal to discriminate against African American and Black - people in hiring, housing, health care, etc., in all of Florida.
We Urgently Request - economic justice.
We urgently request: Our Fair share of all contracts let by the cities and Counties of Florida.
We Urgently Request - employment parity within City and County Governments;
Employment for the employable and training and retraining for the unemployable citizens and residents o Florida Cities...
We Urgently Request - full participation at every decision making level within the areas and the Cities of Our Statewide - Interdenominational -Ministers.
We Urgently Request - that the Mayors, City Councils, County Commissioners, and City Managers, and County Administrators, aggressively pursue educational excellence for all of the citizens of the Florida People United Statewide Humanitarian and - Interdenominational -Groups.
We MUST Raise the academic standard, Disparities, and eliminate the academic performance gap that exists between African American, Hispanic, Caribbean and European Descent, White students.
RECOMMENDATIONS LIST
(The following recommendations reflect conversations with FLORIDA AGENCIES officers)
Establish a Culturally Sensitive and Citizens Driven and Directed Portion of Training and better state-of-the-art training program for police officers.
We demand a Program that is ongoing ; and recurring, and make it mandatory that all officers at every level complete a minimum of 96 approved hours of Cultural Diversity And Sensitivity Testing and training per year.
Reevaluate with the Entire Community, the barriers to hiring by Florida Law Enforcement Agencies.
Change and Allow Citizen Input into the rules for affirmative actions in Hiring and firing police at every level; and especially for those officers who violate the laws, or who disregard and violate department procedures.
Do away with fixed shifts for police officers, and implement
Community Need based Police Services.
Go to two or three month rotations especially in areas where POLICE are known to Violate People’s Rights constantly, into other areas, where these actions do not occur.
Police officer promotion should require a minimum of four years active duty with good to excellent performance evaluations each year.
Now a patrolman can promote to a detective in an inconsistent number of years. Change this to a level that is reasonable in the minds of all of the people who pay for their services, the Citizens in numbers of years.
Get back to basic police work; enforce traffic laws, investigating crimes, patrolling the streets, etc.
Eliminate excessive special units.
Reinstated vice (prostitution, drugs, gambling, etc.)
Increase the capacity of the patrol officer to do detective work, rather than petty Drug issues.
Patrol Sgt. should spend their time on the streets.
Utilize the Skills of the persons who scialize in data entry by civilians.
Minimize acting in a reactionary mode.
"Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic? Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But conscience asks the question - is it right? There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right." - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

66.)
Stephen Cox has Defrauded with Sharon Donohue, the Orange County Citizens; , While Claiming to work in Orange County, When in Fact Stephen Cox was Unlawfully subsidizing his Private Corporation by Working at Orange County expense and actually making Money for Himself in Several other nearby Counties: at The SAME TIME and for the SAME Hours that he claimed in each County for COMPENSATED Work time; through and from: East Central Florida Resource Development Council along with One of Our Former Board Members; Nick Francisco. Sharon Donohue Knew of these Schemes and False Claims.
These Actions by Sharon Donohue and Stephen Cox, have Cheated the United States of Federal Tax Dollars, employee Taxes, Corporation Taxes and Local Government Services.
