Real journalism in a virtual world: Reuters and Second Life
Posted by John Burke on February 8, 2007 at 10:02 PM
Ever wanted to fly? Dance like a pro? Be teleported to your next destination? Simple. Sign up for the virtual world of Second Life, a growing phenomenon that has birthed a dynamic online economy. International news agency Reuters decided to embed its own reporter to follow its developments.
Nic Fulton, Chief Scientist at Reuters, and community editor Mark Jones joined Second Life reporter Adam Pasick (or Adam Reuters as he’s known virtually) introduced the concept to the WeMedia Forum in Miami, explaining that the news agency considers its experiments in Second Life as research and development.
Turns out, Adam doesn’t consider reporting in Second Life to be that different fundamentally from reporting in the real world – the same principles apply. He spends his days reading, researching and interviewing people just like a normal journalists – but he does it all on the Web within the realm of the burgeoning world.
He reports on breaking news relative to avatars, such as the Swedish government setting up a virtual Chamber of Commerce or the American Congress debating the taxation of online economies (Second Life could be a ½ billion dollar economy by the end of 2007).
There are some differences, however. Pasick described how interviews could be held on a group level, inviting other participants to an interview and having them ask their own questions that Pasick can then use in his reporting. He noted that it’s impossible to include the audience in interviews through traditional media.
As Adam Reuters spends more time soaring and teleporting through Second Life, he’ll surely find some other ways in which such technologies could change the way journalists work. Stay tuned.

TO: HIS EXCELLENCY, Dr. Per Stig Mّller the minister of the foreign affairs of the Denmark
Peace be upon those who follow the true guidance:
I have reviewed what some of the news agencies dealt with concerning the Danish news agency Jyllands-Posten had published, which I believe it to be a heinous mistake and dreadful deviation from the path of justice, reverence and equality. The said agency published 12 cartoon caricatures on the 30th of September, 2005, ridiculing Mohammed , the messenger of Islam. One of these cartoons pictures Allah's Messenger PBUH, wearing a turban that resembles a bomb wrapped around his head. What a pathetic projection!
I was extremely saddened to read such news.
I personally visited the site of the agency on the net.
I examined the size of the blundering scandal it was. On Sept 29th, 2005 issue of , Jyllands-Posten, I saw and read dreadful news and cartoons.
The news and the cartoons were horrifying and extremely disturbing to me.
I believe al Muslims who read, viewed or learned about this news were equally saddened, disappointed and disturbed. All criticized such work and felt awful and dismayed about it. Similarly, I do believe that all sane and wise people, I believe, would feel the same about it.
The contemporary world is witnessing today great much confusion all over. Innocent blood is being shed. Innocent lives are being harvested by oppression and transgression. We are in utmost need to spread peace, justice and love all over the world. We need to call for the respect and reverence of all Divine and heavenly Messages and Scriptures. By doing so, we would be able to preserve the divine messages and demonstrate love, appreciation and reverence to the Prophets and Messengers of Allah, the Almighty to this world.
We would further help to preserve the souls, honor and belongings of all mankind all-over-the-world. We would further demonstrate the respect and honor of the human rights all over the world.
The claim of Jyllands-Posten newspaper that they allow, promote and practice freedom-of-speech, by publishing cartoons ridiculing Mohammed the Prophet of Islam, is a non-convincing claim. All worlds' constitutions and international organizations insist on and demand to respect all the Prophets and Messengers of Allah, the Almighty. Moreover, they confirm the necessity to respect the Divine Messages, respect others and do not attack the privacy, dignity and honor and principles of others.
In the International World Federation Council of media and press people, it is stated:
(Media people must be alert of risks that may arise as a result of prejudice and discrimination implied by the media. The Council would exert every possible effort to avoid being involved in such calls, which are based on prejudice and religion, sex or other social differences discrimination.
A media man may commit a dangerous professional deviation such as: claiming other's work, ill-interpretation of facts, false accusations of others, condemning others for no basis, accusing others with their integrity and honor for no sound basis or accepting bribes to either publish or prevent the publishing of specific materials.
A noteworthy media-person should believe that it is their duty to give an honest attention to the aforementioned items, and through the general framework of the law in each country.)
Therefore, we also base our opinion and/or statements herein on an honest and sound media proclamation requesting the Danish newspaper to apologize for what they did. The proclamations states: "The media person would exert every possible effort to correct, modify any published information that he/she noticed that they are inaccurate and/or harmful to others."
Undoubtedly, what the Danish newspaper; Jyllands-Posten published is harmful not only for more than two hundred thousand Danish citizen, but also to more than one-billion-three-hundred-million Muslims along with others who are fair and just people. All these hurt people honor, respect and love Mohammed the Prophet. This action will continue to hurt and harm all Muslims so long we live on the face-of-this-earth. Denmark, if does not deal with this problem on a fair ground, will also continue to be a source of harm and convulsion to many Muslims. This is because of the mentality of some Danish individuals who are anti-prophets, messengers and divine messages.
We would like to remind also with the decree which the Human Rights Agency in the United Nations adopted on the 12th of April, 2005. This decree insisted on the ban of distortions and vicious attacks against religions and especially Islam; which had been strongly attacked in the last few years.
Finally, I would like to inform you that all Muslims will certainly stop their commercial business dealing with Denmark until they openly and officially apologize for the shameful attack to the person of Allah's Messenger SAAW by Jyllands-Posten newspaper.
Praise be to Allaah.
We do not wish to respond to slander in kind, but we will answer you, you disbeliever, with quotes from the Word of God (the Qur’aan), if you even believe in the existence of God.
O disbeliever, we debate with you in the words addressed by Allaah (the Arabic name of the One True God) to the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) and the disbelievers. He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O People of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allaah aught but the truth. The Messiah ‘Eesa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary) was (no more than) a Messenger of Allaah and His Word (‘Be!’ – and he was), which He bestowed on Maryam, and a spirit created by Him; so believe in Allaah and His Messengers. Say not: ‘Three (trinity)!’ Cease! (it is) better for you. For Allaah is (the only) One (God). Glory be to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allaah is All-Sufficient as a Disposer of Affairs.”
[al-Nisa’ 4:171]
“Say: O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do you criticize us for no other reason than that we believe in Allaah, and in (the revelation) which has been sent down before (us), and that most of you are faasiqoon (rebellious and disobedient [to Allaah])?”
[al-Maa’idah 5:59]
“How can you disbelieve in Allaah? Seeing that you were dead and He gave you life. Then He will give you death, then again will bring you to life (on the Day of Resurrection) and then unto Him you will return.”
[al-Baqarah 2:28]
“… whosoever disbelieves in Allaah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, then indeed he has strayed far away…
Verily, those who disbelieve in Allaah and His messengers and wish to make a distinction between Allaah and His Messengers (by believing in Allaah and disbelieving in His Messengers) saying, ‘We believe in some but not in others,’ and wish to adopt a way in between,
They are in truth disbelievers. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating torment.”
[al-Nisa’ 4:136, 150-151]
O disbeliever, do you think that you can do any harm to Allaah by your disbelief? Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“… But if you disbelieve, then unto Allaah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and Allaah is Ever Rich (Free of all wants), Worthy of all praise.” [al-Nisa’ 4:131]
You will only increase in hatefulness and loss in the sight of Allaah, you disbeliever, for you are one of the worst of living creatures, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, the worst of moving (living) creatures before Allaah are those who disbelieve, - so they shall not believe.”
[al-Anfaal 8:55]
O disbeliever, are you not going to die? Or do you doubt that as well? Do you know what your position will be when you die, if you die in a state of disbelief? Listen:
“And if you could see when the angels take away the souls of those who disbelief (at death), they smite their faces and their backs, (saying): ‘Taste the punishment of the blazing Fire.’”
[al-Anfaal 8:50]
O disbeliever, woe to you from what will happen to you on the Day of Resurrection! Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“… so woe to the disbelievers from the meeting of a great Day (i.e., the Day of Resurrection, when they will be thrown in the blazing Fire).”
[Maryam 19:37]
We have an appointment with you after death, on the Day of Reckoning:
“On that day those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger [Muhammad SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)] will wish that they were buried in the earth, but they will never be able to hide a single fact from Allaah.”
[al-Nisa’ 4:42]
O disbeliever, do you know what Allaah has prepared for you if you die in a state of disbelief? Read:
“And whosoever does not believe in Allaah and His Messenger [Muhammad SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)], then verily, We have prepared for the disbelievers a blazing Fire.”
[al-Fath 48:13]
“Verily, those who disbelieve, and die while they are disbelievers, it is they on whom is the Curse of Allaah and of the angels and mankind, combined.”
[al-Baqarah 2:161]
“Verily, those who disbelieved, and died while they were disbelievers, the (whole) earth full of gold will not be accepted from any one of them even if they offered it as a ransom. For them is a painful torment and they will have no helpers.”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:91]
“Surely, those who reject Faith, neither their properties, nor their offspring will avail them aught against Allaah. They are the dwellers of the Fire, therein they will abide.”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:116]
Do you know what you will have to drink in Hell if you die as a disbeliever? Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“… But those who disbelieved will have a drink of boiling fluids and painful torment because they used to disbelieve.”
[Yoonus 10:5]
Do you know what you will have to wear on that Day? Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“… Then as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them, boiling water will be poured down over their heads.”
[al-Hajj 22:19]
Do you know what kind of punishment you will endure?
“Surely! Those who disbelieved in Our Signs, We shall burn them in Fire. As often as their skins are roasted through, We shall change them for other skins that they may taste the punishment. Truly, Allaah is Ever Most Powerful, All-Wise.”
[al-Nisa’ 4:56]
“If only those who disbelieved knew (the time) when they will not be able to ward off the Fire from their faces, nor from their backs; and they will not be helped.”
[al-Anbiya’ 21:39]
O reviler, maybe on the Day of Judgement you will wish that you had been a Muslim in this world. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Perhaps (often) will those who disbelieve wish that they were Muslims.”
[al-Hijr 15:2]
O disbeliever, you are among those who have disbelieved and done wrong. Allaah says concerning you and your like (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily those who disbelieve and do wrong, Allaah will not forgive them, nor will He guide them to any way”
[al-Nisa’ 4:168]
“Those who disbelieve and deny our signs are those who will be the dwellers of the Hell-fire.”
[al-Maa’idah 5:10]
There you will have no life, but neither will you be able to find any respite in death. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“But those who disbelieve, for them will be the Fire of Hell. Neither will it have a complete killing effect on them so that they die, nor shall its torment be lightened for them. Thus do We requite every disbeliever!”
[Faatir 35:36]
O disbeliever, have the glad tidings of a punishment from which you will not be able to ransom yourself:
“Verily, those who disbelieve, if they had all that is in the earth, and as much again therewith to ransom themselves thereby from the torment on the Day of Resurrection, it would never be accepted of them, and theirs would be a painful torment.”
[al-Maa’idah 5:36]
O disbeliever, if you want to mock Islam and its followers, this is nothing new:
“Beautified is the life of this world for those who disbelieve, and they mock at those who believe. But those who obey Allaah’s Orders and keep away from what He has forbidden, will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. And Allaah gives (of His bounty on the Day of Resurrection) to whom He wills without limit.”
[al-Baqarah 2:212]
O disbeliever, if you think that the light of Islam will be extinguished, then you are living in a world of illusions. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“They (the disbelievers) want to extinguish Allaah’s Light with their mouths, but Allaah will not allow except that His Light should be perfected even though the disbelievers hate (it).”
[al-Tawbah 9:32]
O disbeliever, do you know that you are cursed if you do not submit to Allaah, so save yourself from this curse:
“Verily, Allaah has cursed the disbelievers, and has prepared for them a flaming Fire (Hell).”
[al-Ahzaab 33:64]
There is still time for you to repent from sin and transgression, so long as you are still alive. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease (from disbelief) their past will be forgiven. But if they return (thereto), then the examples of those (punished) before them have already preceded (as a warning).”
[al-Anfaal 8:38]
Whoever is guided, then it is for his own benefit, and whoever disbelieves, then Allaah has no need of His creation. The curse of Allaah be upon the disbelievers.
What is Islam?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ISLAM AND MUSLIM
The name of this religion is Islam, the root of which is Silm and Salam which means peace. Salam may also mean greeting one another with peace. One of the beautiful names of God is that He is the Peace. It means more than that: submission to the One God, and to live in peace with the Creator, within one's self, with other people and with the environment. Thus, Islam is a total system of living. A Muslim is supposed to live in peace and harmony with all these segments; hence, a Muslim is any person anywhere in the world whose obedience, allegiance, and loyalty are to God , the Lord of the Universe.
MUSLIMS AND ARAB
The followers of Islam are called Muslims. Muslims are not to be confused with Arabs. Muslims may be Arabs, Turks, Persians, Indians, Pakistanis, Malaysians, Indonesians, Europeans, Africans, Americans, Chinese, or other nationalities.
An Arab could be a Muslim, a Christian, a Jew or an atheist. Any person who adopts the Arabic language is called an Arab. However, the language of the Qur'an (the Holy Book of Islam) is Arabic. Muslims all over the world try to learn Arabic so that they may be able to read the Qur'an and understand its meaning. They pray in the language of the Qur'an, namely Arabic. Supplications to God could be in any language.
While there are more than one billion Muslims in the world there are about 200 million Arabs. Among them, approximately ten percent are not Muslims. Thus Arab Muslims constitute only about twenty percent of the Muslim population of the world.
-
ALLAH THE ONE AND THE ONLY GOD
Muslims believe that Allah is the name of the One and Only God. He is the Creator of all human beings. He is the God for the Christians, the Jews, the Muslims, the Buddhists, the Hindus, the atheists, and others. Muslims worship God whose name is Allah. They put their trust in Him and they seek His help and His guidance.
MUHAMMAD
Muhammad was chosen by God to deliver His Message of Peace, namely Islam. He was born in 570 C.E. (Common Era) in Makkah, Arabia. He was entrusted with the Message of Islam when he was at the age of forty years. The revelation that he received is called the Qur'an, while the message is called Islam.
Muhammad is the very last Prophet of God ( Allah ) to mankind. He is the final Messenger of God. His message was and is still to the Christians, the Jews and the rest of mankind. He was sent to those religious people to inform them about the true mission of Jesus, Moses, Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham.
Muhammad is considered to be the summation and the culmination of all the prophets and messengers that came before him. He purified the previous messages from adulteration and completed the Message of God ( Allah ) for all humanity. He was entrusted with the power of explaining, interpreting and living the teaching of the Qur'an.
NON-MUSLIMS
Muslims are required to respect all those who are faithful and God conscious people, namely those who received messages. Christians and Jews are called People of the Book. Muslims are asked to call upon the People of the Book for common terms, namely, to worship One God, and to work together for the solutions of the many problems in the society.
Christians and Jews lived peacefully with Muslims throughout centuries in the Middle East and other Asian and African countries. The second Caliph Umar, did not pray in the church in Jerusalem so as not to give the Muslims an excuse to take it over. Christians entrusted the Muslims, and as such the key of the Church in Jerusalem is still in the hands of the Muslims.
Jews fled from Spain during the Inquisition, and they were welcomed by the Muslims. They settled in the heart of the Islamic Caliphate. They enjoyed positions of power and authority.
Throughout the Muslim world, churches, synagogues and missionary schools were built within the Muslim neighborhoods. These places were protected by Muslims even during the contemporary crises in the Middle East
Madame, Monsieur,
Cordialement.

Quoting from the above link:
"While religious tolerance is surely better than religious war, tolerance is not without its liabilities. Our fear of provoking religious hatred has rendered us incapable of criticizing ideas that are now patently absurd and increasingly maladaptive. It has also obliged us to lie to ourselves — repeatedly and at the highest levels — about the compatibility between religious faith and scientific rationality."
Let's roll...
This act of Danmark newspaper is redicules and i strongly oppose. As a muslim we should boycott and banned all of the danish and norvegn products forever.
Freedom of expression may be hurtful to certain mindsets. I agree that the overreaction by the Muslim community towards the drawings that hurt their belief system, is no different than the overreaction by the US Government or Israel to remarks that are taken as anti-semetic. Fundamentalist Christian, Jewish and Muslim viewpoints all have common ground in that they are inflexible, resistant to alternate viewpoints and are based in a belief system mired in intolerance, in addition to the fact that they are all based on teachings that stem from one man Abraham.
ISLAM WAS A GREAT RELIGION /SOCIETY...... VERY INNOVATIVE AT GIVEN TIME....
EVEN THOUGH ALWAYS ALSO "POWER-HUNGRY"...LIKE OTHER RELIGIONS AS WELL. NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL.
IT APPEARS, THAT TODAY'S ISLAM /MOST OF ITS FOLLOWERS CAN'T ACCEPT THE TRUE, REAL ALWAYS CHANGING WORLD. THEIRS MEDIEVAL VIEWS AND INABILITY TO REFORM/ADJUST THEIR "OLDFASHIONED" BELIEVES ARE OF COURSE NOT VERY PRODUCTIVE IN TODAY'S WORLD.
IT SEEMS TO ME THAT ESPECIALLY EUROPEAN MOSLEMS, WHILE LIVING IN A FREE SOCIETY AND WHILE ENJOYING SO MANY PERSONAL FREEDOMS OF OUR OPEN AND TOLERANT SOCIETY, ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT ABLE TO ACCEPT ALL CONSEQUENCES OF THIS FREEDOM AND EXERCISE INTOLERANCE VS. THEIR EUROPEAN HOST COUNTRIES !
FREE SPEECH IS ONE OF THEM !
THESE HYPOCRITES!!!
I GUESS THAT "JESUS" CARICATURES PUBLISHED IN ANY ISLAMIC COUNTRY WOULD NEVER CAUSE SIMILAR REACTIONS BY ANY "INFIDELS"! NOR ANY ARABIC/ISLAMIC NEWSPAPER EMPLOYEE WOULD BE FIRED (ANALOG REDACTOR IN CHIEF Jacques Lefranc) BECAUSE OF PUBLISHING JESUS CARICATURES....! GREETINGS TO MR. Raymond Lakah......
ALAH INSHALLAH
Freedom of Speech does not mean freedom to offend any person's religion. The caricatures were not only depicting Prophet Muhammed (Peace be upon him), they did not present the true picture, they were meant to distort the truth about him and connect him to terrorism which he was so far from. If you really aim at freedom of expression, please read about him, know the man who muslims love more than their own selves and kids.
Do you call this freedom of speech??? What if one of our newspapers made fun of a sybmol of your religion or even made fun of anything related to your country, would you simply refer to it as freedom of speech..I bet you would turn it into WAR!!!
You have obviously disgraced yourselves in front of all nations, and I believe you deserve to be getting this kind of attitude from the arabic nation...
I posted the following: Freedom of Speech does not mean freedom to offend
any person's religion. The caricatures were not only depicting Prophet
Muhammed (Peace be upon him) & embodying him, In fact, they were meant to
distort the truth about him and connect him to terrorism which he was so

Muhammad (pbuh) was the greatest man that ever lived!"
But all this still remains incomplete without the Master's verdict; Muhammad's (pbuh) predecessor - Jesus Christ, (pbuh). We will now apply his own standard for evaluating greatness.
JOHN THE BAPTIST
John the Baptist, known throughout the Muslim world as Yahya (Peace be upon him) was a contemporary prophet of the Messiah. They were also
cousins. Here is what the Master has to say of him:
Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: Matthew 11:11
Every son of man is "born of women." By this very fact John the Baptist is greater than Moses, David, Solomon, Abraham or Isaiah; none of the Israelite prophets excluded. What gives John this ascendancy over every other prophet? It could not be any miracle, because the Bible records none to his credit. It could not be his teachings, because he brought no new laws or regulations. Then what makes him the greatest? Simply because he was the heralder, a pre-cursor, a harbinger of the happy news of the coming of the Messiah. This is what made John the greatest, but Jesus (pbuh) claims that he himself was even greater than the greatest Why?
But I have greater witness than that of John (the Baptist): For The Works which the Father has given me to finish
John 5:36
It is the "witness," the commission which God Almighty had entrusted him with, which makes Jesus (pbuh) greater than even John.Applying these very standards as enunciated by the Master, we find that -
1. John the Baptist was the greatest of all the Israelite prophets, because he heralded the mighty Messiah (Jesus pbuh).
Similarly Jesus (pbuh) would be greater than even John because he heralded "The Spirit of Truth, the Comforter," who was to guide mankind into all Truth
(of the Gospel of St. John, chapter 16).
2. The diocese, the mission of Jesus (pbuh), or "the works which God had given him to accomplish," was limited to the Lost sheep of the House of Israel (Matthew 15:24), whereas the mission of Muhammad (pbuh) was universal. He had been told -
And we have sent thee not (O Muhammad), but as a Mercy unto (all) the worlds. Holy Quran 21:107
In keeping with his grand commission, Muhammad (pbuh) consistently delivered his Message to one and all who would hear, irrespective of race, class or creed, He welcomed them all in the religion of God, without any discrimination. He had no thought of dividing the creatures of God into "dogs and pigs" (Matthew 7:6) or into "sheep and goats" (Matthew 25:32).
Mohamed PBUH was the Messenger of the One True God, who was sent as a Mercy unto all mankind, unto the whole universe And, he never forgot this mission even right up to his dying day.
Towards the end of his earthly sojourn, when he could look back to a hectic and dangerous past, now crowned with success; he now feels that he could sit back and enjoy the fruits of his toil; he dreams of a life free from turmoil and full of satisfaction and relaxation. Not for him! There is no time to rest or relax. There is work still to be done. God Almighty reminds him - -
WE HAVE NOT SENT THEE
(O MUHAMMAD) BUT TO THE
WHOLE OF MANKIND.
AS A GIVER OF GLAD TIDINGS AND AS A WARNER,
BUT MOST OF MANKIND STILL DO NOT KNOW.
Holy Quran 34:28
