US: Chinese Daily News tried for labor abuse

A federal jury gave reason to a group of immigrant employees working for the Chinese Daily News, in a suit alleging labor law violations, and awarded $2.5 million to the employees.
"This is important because foreign-based companies come here and do business, and a lot of their employees don't speak English," said the plaintiffs’ attorney. "They're taken advantage of."

The newspaper didn’t pay overtime hours and failed to allow meal breaks for 200 employees at its Monterey Park office in California. The company kept no record of hours for reporters and salespeople said an employee.

"For new immigrants here surviving is not easy," said a former employee. "We all feel very lucky to have a job, and we don't know the law."

Before even pretending to defend press freedom, companies and governmental authorities must make sure they preserve individual rights, especially when working in one of the world’s leading preachers – the United States.
