UK: Sun Online grows exponentially?
Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on January 12, 2007 at 10:50 AM
The Sun’s online edition claimed it attracted 56 million new unique visitors from around the world in 2006, and generated 1.2 billion page impressions last year. An online surge explained by investment, good design and sharp management.
56 million people is nearly the size of the UK population.
These figures were released by ABC Electronic, but newspaper websites have disagreed in the past over auditing standards and accounting methods.
This boom in online visitors is due in part to the important investments that were made, when News Corp. sanctioned the budget for the Sun Online’s redesign.
The main new implementation was a community feature, MySun, which was an “instant hit” according to Sun Online editor Pete Picton. Sun’s redesign featured all multimedia implementations: blogs, video, podcasts, RSS feeds and a mobile site.
Deidre's Photo Casebook was translated into video and attracted 20,000 downloads on its first day.
Picton also praised the necessary contributions of his journalists.
If most newspapers did invest more work and funding into their online editions, perhaps they might actually be gaining readership.
