US: what newspapers aren’t doing but should?

Dan Froomkin, writer for washingtonpost.com and Nieman Watchdog, raved about newspapers’ frigidity when it comes to saying things the way they are – isn’t that why journalists enrolled in the first place? “Calling bullshit has never been more vital to our democracy,” said Froomkin.
“I would argue that, more than anything else, it is that they enthusiastically call bullshit,” he said, speaking of the success of Jon Stewart’s and Stephen Colbert’s politico-comedic shows.
Why don’t newspapers do that anymore? “Corporate stultification,” “intense pressure to maintain access to insider sources,” and the “the fear of being labeled partisan” said Froomkin.
Not that a newspaper should lose all objectivity, allow shameless slander, or copy Comedy Central’s TV shows. But some articles need a degree of perspicacious opinion and plain truth, instead of the constant fear of the politically correct.
The nearly unanimous success of Froomkin’s argument, expressed through his readers’ comments, should give newspapers a clear idea of what they’re lacking and what their readership seeks: “calling bullshit”.
