UK: Express journalists face job cuts

Posted by Allie Judson on December 6, 2006 at 11:02 AM
More than 20 journalists from four different Express Newspaper titles have applied for voluntary redundancy. The applications come under the increasing threat of job reductions and a potential strike.

The Express is looking to make 35 job cuts across four of its titles, Daily Express, Sunday Express, Daily Star and Daily Star Sunday. “Job losses are always regrettable but they are necessary in order to keep the company in a healthy financial state, so that we can defend ourselves against hard times and merciless competition." Said Express editor, Peter Hill.

The National Union of Journalists is putting a potential strike to a vote by passing out ballot papers today. Union officials are also planning to meet with Express management later today to discuss the proposed cuts.
